Death Proof (2007)
Tarantino the artist
It does what it says on the box. It is indeed a rather tried and boring concept. Pretty girls messing about having fun talking girly-girl talk and then it gets dangerous... And in the end there is of cause the, by now, classic Tarantino twist.. But that is not at all what this movie is about. This movie is about one thing only. Showing all the crappy Hollywood directors out there how it's done. Tarantino artfully keeps the plot to a minimum and shows us how skillful directing is all it takes to make a movie interesting.
This movie should be enjoyed like a good bottle of wine.
But don't watch it just for the action/blood/horror, there aren't that much.
Watch it for the art.
Sunshine (2007)
Earth sends a crew a idiots to reignite the sun
There is one character in this movie that does not behave completely idiotic: the spaceships computer. From the beginning till the end the entire crew acts like a bunch of fraternity boys out bowling. Time after time they do something stupid and every time they are only saved because the on-board computer knows what to do. This could have made a great comedy. But it's not a comedy and it's not funny, it's just sad. Throughout most of the movie I couldn't help but think: If they had sent the ship unmanned and let the ships computer handle the operation there would have been no problems at all. But of cause there are problems..
this is not science-fiction, just fiction. Very little in this movie is based on realism, just free fantasy. Unfortunately not very interesting fantasy. So don't watch it if that's important to you. The characters are very boring and single-minded and there is no character development. You just don't care what happens to them.
Now for the good part, there are about 5 minutes towards thats not entirely predictable. Unfortunately it goes nowhere.
Thats it.
The Ten Commandments (2005)
Review from an atheists point of view
Despite being a nonbeliever I find religion very interesting. So I thought I would give this film a shot. It's not actually worth the rating I gave it, but I thought I would try to offset all the one star ratings it's been given by angry religious people. Anyway, to fully enjoy this movie I suggest doing what I did, namely read all the reviews of it while watching it. It's very interesting how the ratings range from top to bottom. Also the reason I'm writing this review is that it seem most if not all the other reviews are written by religious people who all compare it to the bible. Thats all good but viewing it as fiction, which the bible obviously is to me, might enable one to enjoy it differently. Well here it is: The acting range from laughable to pretty good 5 or 6 times. The special effects are nothing special these days, but acceptable, since they aren't really the drive of the movie. I quite liked the sets and the costumes, but I honestly don't know what they are supposed to look like historically so they might not be authentic. Overall what carried this movie was the story. Now the story was had a lot going for it interesting twists and turns. But unfortunately thats not enough. A really good story needs to not only have interesting exiting plots going on, it also needs to be believable. In case you don't know the story already I won't mention anything, I'll just say that having studied psychology and sociology for many years I found the behavior of many of the characters less realistic and the plot seems quite naive. So there... . enjoy 4 stars from me because I actually learned something.
