Demonlover (2002)
Interesting but unsatisfying
Director Assayas doesn't usually give us neat endings and this movie is definitely no exception. Maybe I missed the point, but it seems that he was making a take-off on spy thrillers crossed with some of the jumps in logic found in dreams or maybe some virtual reality games. In the end, I did not care about anyone or any of the ideas in the film, although the cast was great, particularly Connie Nielsen in a part that is practically unplayable.
Pour la peau d'un flic (1981)
Fast paced and unexpectedly funny crime drama
Despite some extreme violence (shootings at close range, rape of one of the main characters), there is a surprising amount of humor in this picture. I wonder if this was Delon's way of moving away from the sometimes humorless approach taken in his films with J-P Melville. It also features a nice performance by a very young Anne Parillaud.
Aprimi il cuore (2002)
Italian psycho-drama
I just saw this at the New Italian Cinema festival at NY's Lincoln center. While the digitally shot film was not without interest, it really comes across as re-tread of Chabrol, particularly in the last third. However the young director/writer/star's work is impressive when you consider she made this film for about $5,000 US.
