Narcos (2015)
Sprawling and Satisfying
Fascinating, thrilling and powerful in all aspects. Top notch acting performance by Wagner Moura playing Pablo Escobar. Boyd Holbrook as Steve Murphy is very solid and grows in stature as it unfolds. The highly cinematic Colombia and the busy urban life makes it visually formidable as well.
Netflix used to cater to a more highbrow type of audience, it seems long ago now. But this show felt like a close pproximation of the real world in a very entertaining fashion. Another good thing about "NARCOS" is the the fast pace it has to keep the audience engaged. Film lovers who like gangster movies will find this new series gripping. Folks looking out for some action paced crime drama should definitely hang on to this one. First episode will grab your attention to the level that you would want to see all ten episodes at once. Finally we got some gangster stuff to look at in classic settings.
Viridiana (1961)
Spanish Masterpiece
Skewering every possible value held dear by Franco and the Spanish Church, Buñuel's genius is apparent in every frame, above which shines the 'Last Supper'.
And it is precisely this scene which gives one the impression that the real stars in the making of this film were the motley beggars taken in from the streets.
It is their reckless behavior and all-too-human complexity that overshadow the movie's stars and topple the cake, as if Preston Sturges had inhabited the Spaniard's body to help him convey a horrifying sxrewball chaos.
The movie portrays the differences between people from different backgrounds and opposing sense of morality. What it all adds up to is the unfathomable absurdist tragedy of the human condition, done in the most painstaking winksome fashion by a true master.
Leopard Skin (2022)
One of the most unconventional (but most pleasantly genre-tastic) shows of the past 25 years.
In the world of Leopard Skin, we're brought along with characters on a situation that would seem surreal on a Bunuel level (i.e. Three hapless thieves break into a house where the hostages aren't all that afraid of them and have much bigger, more perverse problems hanging over their heads), but there's a a sort of freewheeling existentialist bent to it that elevates it past being either too strange or just too quirky. It's just about right, which is tough to do.
At different times it behaves like a romp, like a thriller, like a drama about women who have been mistreated by a powerful man, like a French sex comedy, it has dark undertones that somehow transform into a love story that folds all the pieces together. It's crazy, it's awkward, and it's even got heart too. For those who are tired of spoon-fed tripe by the streamers it's an excellent escape into one of the most unconventional (but most pleasantly genre-tastic) shows of the past 25 years.
