Kings (2009)
More than a show...an Experience
The story of King David has always been my favorite in the bible. This show brings that story to television, allowing more people to enjoy it, even those who don't read the bible. The modernized aspect of the show makes it even more appealing to today's viewers. The actors to a great job portraying each biblical figure, and are good ones as well. The show is also filmed in a cinematographic way, with great camera-work, lighting, and dialogue. The setting is beautiful, and accurately portrays the biblical Shiloh. In all, I look forward to watching this show every week, and hope that they continue the series with the same quality and momentum each previous episode had.
Eagle Eye (2008)
Technology Sucks
Finally, Shia stars in a movie that isn't so childish, although Transformers was great. Eagle Eye went up and over my expectations, demonstrating the idea that " Technology Sucks." Eagle Eye wasn't a very thought out political thriller, but nonetheless entertaining. Shia is accused of terrorism, and along with a side character, played by Michelle Monaghan, they run from the government, following orders from an unknown caller, in order not to die.
There is a twist ending to this movie, as things are not what they seem. I think that paying 10 bucks to see this movie in theaters was definitely be worth the price, as the special effects are excellent, but are somewhat hard to see due to many explosions and car chases. Many of the action scenes were very unrealistic, as the directors may have forgot about gravity, but otherwise they kept me on the edge of my seat. Eagle Eye deserved 7 stars for its mediocre political ideas, and great acting, except by Billy Bob Thorton.
Hancock (2008)
Half Good, Half Bad
Hancock looked like another cheesy Will Smith movie in the commercials and it somewhat was... in the last half of the movie.
At the beginning, where Will Smith was a lonely and drunk superhuman, was priceless. He was hilarious, swearing, drinking, and hurting people all in a funny way. So, not for kids under 13. But funny for the older. Smith meets a saves businessman, who is trying to make a logo to change the world, when he is almost hit by a train. And so the movie starts. It was great, until a huge secret is revealed. Then, the movie lost all it had worked for.
So, for my final paragraph, I will say that Hancock is a movie to go see with a bunch of friends for laughs and dinner after, considering the shortness of the movie. I would also just go out and rent the DVD when it comes out, as a "sleepover movie." Anyway, this movie is NOT a Will Smith classic, only a one where too much was expected of him. If Smith wasn't the actor, no one would have liked Hancock. I give it 6 out of 10 because of the great first half and okay acting of Smith.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Joker Made the Movie
To start, The Dark Knight definitely lived up to it's hype. Intense would be a word to describe the action in the movie, as well as suspenseful. With every weapon pulled out in the movie, someone dies, unlike most movies where the gun is just put down and the one it is pointed at stays alive. the action and dialogue scenes were equalized to keep the audience entertained as well as informed.
Now, to start with the characters. Not much humor was passed in the movie, not including the Joker. He was the saviour of the movie. If there was no Joker, the movie may have gotten just over 6 stars on my rating. He kept the audience entertained with black humor comedy and most of the action/ killing scenes. Ledger did a better job than Nicholson in my opinion. As for Batman, Christian Bale did a great job of not attracting the movie's attention to himself. For most of the movie, everyone really just wanted to see the Joker. Two Face, the other villain, was just as exciting as Batman.
This movie could have been better if each of the main characters was developed more and not just the Joker. That is why I gave the movie 9 out of 10 stars. The filming was great, the dialouge was great, and the action was great, but the characters weren't developed too well. Definitely see this movie as it will blow you away on the big screen.
Wipeout (2008)
Possibly the Best Show of the Summer
What better way to end a long and hot Tuesday with a cool show? I like how this show has the theme of summer kept in mind to the audience, and the somewhat dry humor to it too. I had been anticipating this show ever since the commercials came out and I was satisfied. The idea of the show is somewhat original, the one-whole-game-per-show keeps the show moving, and at the end of the season, a game with all the winners will probably be played. This show may seem like a waste of time, but it is fun to watch at night before going to bed. Watch this rather than that other game show after it, as that show is absolutely horrible and boring.
The Strangers (2008)
I Could Have Made This Movie
This movie sucked. It was about one hour long and probably took as much time to film it. The whole movie was people hiding from some people in masks. I sat in the theater waiting for a face to appear and an obnoxious shriek from Liz Tyler. (It was probably her daddy screaming though.) Finally, after many stupid moments and the ending came. The killers were stupid enough to take off their 50 cent masks from iparty and kill the people who they could have killed at the start of the movie. Plus this movie had no talking. The best line was "Why are you doing this to us?" In conclusion, my dog could have been a better actor than Liz Tyler.
Superhero Movie (2008)
Last Minute Monstrosity
Seeing these kinds of movies in the theaters with friends is fun, but watching them at home isn't. This movie was a little better than I had expected it to be. I was it with some friends which made the movie a little better. The acting in this movie is the same as all the scary movie, epic movie, etc, but the actors were much better than the other movies. I was surprised to see Drake Bell as the main character and a few new, funnier actors. The president from the scary movies is also a main character. This movie contained not so many funny scenes, but the ones that were funny were hilarious. Not too many in your face sex jokes, but that is a good thing in this movie. See this movie only once, because the next time you see it , it won't be funny.
Cloverfield (2008)
Worth My Money
While deciding to see this movie, I thought it was going to be a waste of money and time. The runtime looked too short, under 1:30, the genre looked too dumb, and hearing about the filming style, I was having doubts. At first, after taking up what seemed like half the movie, I thought I knew that I was right. Then, the action started. The action was fast paced, there were no long periods of time with nothing happening. The ending was kind of a surprise, but ended like the Blair Witch. After thinking about it, I have realized that this was a great movie. It had a monster that couldn't be described in words, great killings, and lots of blood. A different style monster movie.
Juno (2007)
Should Have Won The Oscar
To start off, this movie should have beat No Country For Old Men. No Contest. This movie demonstrates a modern view of life with humor and romance. The characters were classic and the whole movie was altogether cute. Not a movie for kids under the age of 13, considering it talks about many sexual things, but not in a really rude way. The movie never got boring and made me laugh a lot. The main character, played by Ellen Page, has a very positive outlook on life. She may swear, have sex, and talk to adults like they were kids, but this personality was unique. In all, this movie is the must see movie of 2007 and a great movie to represent 2007.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
A Fast - Paced Suspense Movie
It turns out that the movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture was a movie starring a serial killer. This movie was very entertaining towards the beginning, the suspense, the action, the development of the characters, and more. After that, the movie just got dumb, with the unrealistic dialogue, the killing of an innocent woman, and a car crash that no one would have survived, was survived. One interesting thing in this movie was the weapon used for killing. It just a high pressure air tank, with a thin nozzle used as a gun. In all, the movie had the potential to be good at the beginning, with the beautiful scenery and great action, but the actors lost it as the movie progressed. To finish, I think that this movie would have been better if it wasn't based on a book, considering all the writers had to do was read the book. This movie wasn't worth a Best Picture Award.
