The Visitor (2007)
A surprising gem, well played
I'd just repeat what the other people said with the 8-10 star comments.
For me it was the wonderfully delicate playing of R. Jenkins. Just great.
I also liked the story. Although political I think it plays its part well. It shows the difference between compassion and absolute paranoia. See America as it is for normal people and not what Hollywood and CNN makes you see.
Although technically deportation might be a valid and legal measure the film quite correctly questions the modus for selection and the sense behind this. In this it is not America alone but the question to all of us how much change or foreign people we want to allow into our lives. The world is gyrating to ever more conservative views due to the threat of terrorism thereby slowly ousting our humanity. How far do we let it go? This film does open ones eyes again to a fact that we'd love to ignore. So 9 out of 10 for me.
Helvetica (2007)
Excellent Film on Design
Helvetica is a beautifully created documentary about the Helvetica font. Now you might think this is a dry and boring subject (as I did before I saw the film) but it is in fact a fascinating tale of design and it's implications.
I think this is a film for anyone who wants to know what design is all about. Never mind that it's based on the font it is a statement on design in general too.
The interviewed people are all extremely interesting and succeed in conveying their passions and convictions. The video work is convincing too and shows very well how common and you might say oversaturated the world is with Helvetica.
This Film WILL change how you see writing. It teaches how to look for the font and it's influence in writing and advertising.
Great film, definitely a must watch.
