Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale (2010)
Pink glitter
In this Barbie movie, the aforementioned protagonist is fired from her job and her boyfriend breaks up with her. So what do you decide to do? Visiting her fashion designer aunt and being a model for her brand, which is being forgotten.
The concept of "I am in crisis, how will I deal with it? Fulfilling a dream" is simply great. Even with her life falling apart, Barbie will remain true to "you can be anything you want to be," teaching us that sometimes crises can save your life.
Animation is in its golden age, a mix between the early 2000s and up to 2013, I would consider, which was the best period of Barbie animation. The color obviously could not be missing. And in this case, the brightness.
The antagonist is very well developed, being a children's film. An ambitious and envious young woman, who cannot bear to lose and makes unfair competition. 10/10.
The end, huh. It's the one you'd expect in the franchise, everyone's happy, and Barbie gets what she deserves. Don't expect more or less being aimed at little girls. Of course, the message of empowerment is undoubtedly one of the best. In addition, good teamwork and that we are all necessary, each with their abilities.
Turning Red (2022)
Excellent concept
The film follows Mei, a girl of Chinese origin who, together with her family, protects a traditional shrine in Toronto, Canada. Her family has a curse, in which women will define themselves into red pandas upon going through puberty.
It is not necessary to hide that it is a reference to menstruation. Being ashamed when it arrives, being confused and afraid of what others will say. She also takes into account the toxic home where she is growing up: her mother demands perfection and is demure to the traditional, she does not allow her daughter to have tastes like the pop band.
Her friends are flat, cliché characters. Although some complain about a "forced inclusion", there is really no problem in their nationality, but rather in remembering the same thing: the nerd, the masculine and the dumb. I understand, it is a film for very young people.
The animation has an anime style, it works so fine! As a studio, Pixar did a good job, but nothing to write home about in this case.
The script is excellent. And the expected ending, but it does not leave a bad taste in the mouth. On the contrary, it teaches us to accept the changes we experience in the body.
Although an infant would not have seen it (they would not understand it), I also do not see the problem in that young people from 9 and up see it. The ideal age is considered as 11 years.
Barbie of Swan Lake (2003)
Magic and more magic
The Barbie movie is based on the classic ballet "Swan Lake". But you don't have to know the whole original story to understand it. Odette is a young baker who one day, chasing a unicorn, enters a magical forest, and must save the entire population from an evil sorcerer. However, she is turned into a swan during the day, and must break the spell with an oath of undying love.
This Barbie movie is good, in a nutshell. For the time it was excellent, today the rendering leaves something to be desired, but it is hidden with the animation, color and special effects.
The story is not too far from the original classical ballet, they only added bright colors and obviously Barbie as the protagonist.
I congratulate the soundtrack, it is sublime.
The ending is forced, but considering the original aspects and the time, it doesn't surprise me, although in our times it would leave a bad message for girls (a prince will save them and they get married after two days).
But the franchise always reminds you that kindness and humility will get you far. I recommend it, beyond nostalgia, to watch it with infants and release some mixed feelings.
20segi sonyeo (2022)
Bittersweet tragedy
The story narrates about a teenage girl in South Korea, around 1999. Her best friend has to undergo heart surgery in another country, but first she leaves Na Bo-Ra in charge of investigating the boy she likes. However, Bo-ra begins to develop feelings for someone else.
The movie is very beautiful. I'll start by talking about its aesthetic: very 90s, with some faded parts that feel nostalgic. In addition to the range of vibrant colors, and the perfect atmosphere for the time.
The story itself is cliché. But that doesn't mean it's bad. In fact, they have done an excellent job. It is the exact reflection of first love, with obvious drama. The cast is perfect. Kim Yoo-jung is just perfect.
The finish is bitter, even predictable, still hard to savor. It is the phrase "first love is never forgotten", because it is very strong and makes you feel special. And the director managed to capture all her personal experience to bring us this work of art.
I must thank the whole team for this moment. Even romance, being a genre not liked by everyone, this movie can make you think otherwise. I recommend seeing it at least once in your life. And if possible, millions of times.
Tinker Bell (2008)
Fly to your heart
The film tells us about the birth of Tinkerbell, who arrives in Fairyland and discovers her talent. However, he is not satisfied with it, since it does not allow him to travel to Mainland. Therefore, she begins to try other talents, risking her well-being and that of her friends.
Tinkerbell, the franchise that was in the infancy of all 2000s kids. And it is always remembered magical, fresh, childish but not tedious.
In a few words, it tells how the Tinkerbell fairy is born and arrives in the land of fairies. However, she is not happy with the talent she has been given, since it prevents her from traveling to the mainland with her friends.
The animation is so beautiful, full of colors and vibrancy, like a Disney classic, my eyes are literally blessed.
The story brings tears to your eyes no matter how many times you watch it. The final message is clear: you have to be happy and satisfied with how you are, and what you can achieve; don't compare yourself to others for what you don't have. And in the end, we are all capable of doing the same.
Tink is annoying, but as a protagonist he is perfect. An insecure, capricious and ambitious girl, who wants to achieve what she wants at all costs. Her friends are secondary but memorable characters.
This film could be classified as "the end of the beginning", for all the nostalgia it gives. And of course, for bringing us one of the most iconic franchises of the 2000s. Thanks to this, you can believe in fairies.
Coraline (2009)
Great lesson
Coraline tells us about the family life of a girl, frustrated because her relatives and friends are not what she wants. It is then that he discovers a door, which he will walk through and start living the life of his dreams. But everything comes at a cost, and that's being locked up with the wicked witch forever.
Literally it is the saying of "he who covers a lot, squeezes little". We can't have everything for free without paying for it. And one way or another, we will run out of debt.
The movie is good, but they have made a lot of hype for what it really is. It should be considered one of the best animations of 2009, because for the time it's great. And it is not a film for children, gentlemen. It is more geared towards teens-adults. Not everything animated is children's content.
Blonde (2022)
I'm sorry, but no
This movie is fine, if we remember that it is based on a Marilyn Monroe "fanfiction".
I must highlight the performance of the actress (Ana de Armas), it is so accurate that it makes you doubt that you are watching a fictional movie.
Also, those moments where they were shown in black and white, mimicking a trauma or memory of Monroe were well applied.
However, it is not entirely good. It seems that they are reduced to Marilyn as a sexual object, like her relationship with JFK or with the brothers actors. I very much agree that it is boring, you probably won't finish watching it, unless you're a huge Miss Marilyn fan. And they would probably let Norma Jeane rest in peace.
Hei tai yang 731 si wang lie che (1994)
So-so
Let's imagine the movie is an "alternate ending" to the true story of Squadron 731. Given this, it's slightly more enjoyable. There are things that don't add up or are left very open, like Tama being sold to Japan. It is poorly produced that it even seems filler, or a very forced story. In other words, they mention it and that's it. What the hell happened in between? Please explain more.
One good thing is that there isn't as much unnecessary gore. But the one that exists, well, it is. And there is always the same complaint in the successors to the first film: why is the ending so boring? I doubt that's even called an ending.
The version that I saw, has quite backward subtitles. I mean, they would change scenes and the characters would still talk in the previous one.
It's good to hang out for a while. But honestly, it's not worth it.
Hei tai yang 731 xu ji zhi sha ren gong chang (1992)
Really?
Actually, I have nothing good to highlight about this film. The romantic story that shows us was very out of place. The experiments are for mere exploitation cinema.
The end? So, so, it could have been better (or directly, not even make this movie).
Image quality is average, taking into account the year of filming.
Compared to its predecessor, it left us many messages to reflect on biological warfare, which was largely omitted from the general story; and most importantly, without taking only one political side. A detail to keep in mind: this film is not by the first director (Mou Tun-fei), but by someone else. Of course, Dr. Ishii Shiro is much scarier than the previous installment.
I don't think it's worth watching, the third one is slightly better, opt to skip it.
Lolita (1997)
Good movie, bad execution
Lolita is one of the most controversial and difficult novels in literature. It literally shows us the point of view of a pedophile, abusing his stepdaughter. The book gives you a feeling of empathy and disgust at the same time. Although the film is good, I must highlight some points:
Quilty was better developed in the book, or in the 1962 version. In Adrian Lyne's film, he was left with unknowns and fleeting moments.
The fact that they used a minor to sexualize her in that way, so shameless, is not right. Pay attention to the hidden messages as there are moments like Lo's clothes that don't look like 50's girl clothes, that's how H. H imagined it.
The aesthetics of cinema in general is BEAUTIFUL. Nostalgic feeling with romanticism, full of vivid colors, very classic from the 90s.
Is it wrong to promote it as romance? Yes and no. A simple view, yes it is. But anyone with half a brain and who knows anything about the novel will classify it as a drama. I want to believe that the genre "romance" was by repercussion.
Other than that, Lolita is a poorly executed movie. They failed at first to use Swain at age 14, they got carried away with the marketing. And that ending? The one in the book is bittersweet: it leaves you empty and crying, but it was what it deserved. This does not. It was a fictional ending. If there is a new version, please don't make these mistakes.
Hei tai yang 731 (1988)
It was not necessary
The movie focuses on a group of young Japanese men (the youngest will be around 17-18 years old), who will be allies for a special branch of the army. This fact is very accurate, since when the tide turned for the war in the East, Japan was forced to recruit even children. In addition, it would show us a vulnerable and sensitive side of the laboratory workers: most did not agree with doing so.
Returning to the plot, the recruits are landed in Harbin, China, at what appears to be a sawmill (undercover to avoid detection). And the film consists of that: showing you in a grotesque and extremely graphic way how they extirpate people, or tear off the melted arms of a woman. The lightest I think is the murder of a newborn by covering it with snow.
Of all the characters I was able to meet, I only followed Ishikawa. Cold, serious, does not waste time on necessary things, follows the rules to the letter. However, everything changes when he sees how his Chinese friend is murdered, thinking of taking revenge (half filler, but after all he gives a message of rebellion).
To close, I think it would have been a better movie if it didn't have so much gore. It ended up being exploitation cinema, with little educational value and awareness about the Sino-Japanese biological warfare (quite forgotten and omitted from history, by the way). Although I must say that the message is clear: friendship is friendship, history is history; and the vast majority of soldiers do not fight out of hatred, but out of ignorance.
I think you should see it at least once in your life, but I don't know if twice.
Girl from Nowhere (2018)
A lot of messages
The series tells us about the school life of Nanno, a young woman who doesn't seem to be human. In each episode, he reveals the darkest secrets of teachers and students. And in all of them he leaves us a reflective message about human behavior, such as hatred and envy being the driving force, or when people come together to hate a certain person or group, rather than out of sincere friendship.
At the beginning of the second season, the series reveals Yuri, a poor young woman who was used as a servant for her rich friends. Nanno and Yuri "form an alliance" to take revenge for people's wrongdoing. However, the second girl thinks that Nanno's traditional way of applying karma is too slow, and she herself uses is the representation of revenge.
Kitty Chicha fits this character like a glove, even with her forced laugh she gives off bad vibes. Asian series are taking more and more foothold in the world of entertainment, and this is no exception. However, she is quite predictable at times, and follows the cliché of the black-haired woman with bangs, eccentric and marginalized by everyone, but ends up being the strongest in the room.
I'm looking forward to the third season!
