Calm with Horses (2019)
Terrific Performances & Beautiful Writing
This film definitely isn't for everyone. However, superior outings from the cast (especially from lead Cosmo Jarvis as Arm & supporting actress Niamh Algar as his ex Urs) combined with top notch writing & direction help lift what might have otherwise have been a total downer of an indy film into one well worth watching.
Cosmo Jarvis delivered a surprisingly nuanced performance of a simple man dealing with a world he doesn't seem to completely understand & really isn't capable of dealing with. What a heart-wrenching outing from him.
The production values are high. The car chase was very well done & beautifully shot. As the first feature from Director Nick Rowland, it is a remarkable achievement.
Southland (2009)
I love this show
It was perfect. I loved the gritty look, the hand-held camera work was awesome (it was very fluid and gave the show a reality show feel, almost like an episode of Cops) and the locations all so well chosen...
The stories were all terrific and I felt very true to life.
Ben McKenzie is terrific as the earnest rookie and Regina King shone, it's probably her best role. The other cast is all so good too.
NBC was stupid for canceling this show and keeping Jay Leno on the air. I like Jay, but his show doesn't need to be on five nights a week. Maybe they'll move it to once or twice a week and bring back the solid dramas NBC used to be known for.
As for Southland, I really hope this show gets a chance with another network.
If it does, I'll watch this show wherever it ends up.
Texas (2002)
Energetic, Crude, Engaging and Funny!
"Texas" follows the members of Russell Crowe's band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, on a journey to record a new CD. The film follows the close-knit band as they journey from Australia to England and then onto Austin, Texas during the summer of 2000.
The band's lead guitarist and Crowe's song-writing partner, Dean Cochran, is the film's narrator. Crowe and Cochran are close friends and this film documents their long friendship almost as much as it documents the music they make together.
Crowe and his band mates are surprisingly crude but they always have something funny to say.
I found the film highly engaging. It really captures the band's energy and the joy they have while playing together.
Seeing this film is the next best thing to seeing them play live.
