Turning Red (2022)
8/10
A sweet story of acceptance
8 June 2023
The film is aimed at a particular audience - outsider girls who are huge fangirls of anything, and those adult women who used to be in the same situation.

I must say right away that I sincerely do not understand why everyone is so furious that the cartoon is dedicated to puberty. Yes, this topic is also present there, but quite a lot of really touching and important moments were shown along with it. Continuity of trauma - Mei Li's mother made her daughter in the same ideal that her mother wanted from her; stigmatization of female aggression - "red panda" personifies not only puberty, but the dark side of a person, which must not be suppressed, but with which one must learn to live in peace. As for hyper-custody and inflated parental expectations, well, it's understandable in itself. The theme of friends supporting each other and the fact that at some point friends become closer than parents and the friendship environment seems more understanding than the circle of relatives is shown in a realistic way and, most importantly, is not condemned.

Puberty is a normal and natural process, for some they can begin almost from the age of 9, it is important for a child to know that what is happening to him is a normal process, and not something dirty, vicious and disgusting. Objectively, nothing bad will happen to a child if he watches this movie and learns how growing up feels like.

The animation is very lively, the characters are charming, the character designs are funny and memorable - and this applies to almost every character in the story.

As for me, the cartoon works well for the expected target audience - girls in the range from 6 to 14 years old and the parents who understand the importance of this topic.
