Fading of the Cries (2008)
Failing of the Cries
Brian A. Metcalf has in under 90 minutes managed to use every cliché from classic the horror and fantasy movies and yet manages to go against everything that makes up a compelling movie for any fan of the genre.
The script, to begin with, is a horrible mess starting off with a narrative ego within a flashback of many making parts of the story over explicit whilst absolutely impossible to engage in. The fact is that it's very hard to grasp (or care) what story line is important and which are less so until the far to drawn-out ending.
The characters act inconsistently all over and the very same threats that oppose them are as often deadly in one scene to be ridiculously easy to defeat in the next.
The scenography and the special effects are flat and ugly and the fighting scenes (there's A LOT of them) mainly consist of monsters running straight into swords.
I think that Metcalf was aiming for a mix of "The Lord of the Rings" and "Night of the Living Dead" but ended up with Uwe Boll's "Dungeons and Dragons" mixing with "Resident Evil" (the first of the video games, if you remember the script and acting in that).
It made me sad to see Brad Dourif wading around in this crap and not even he manages to be free of its stench.
The Basement (2009)
Life is full of surprises. Some times you get genital herpes.
I usually don't care too much for writing reviews but the fact that the production team has written some totally fraudulent reviews I feel that I have to put things straight.
OK, if I understood things correctly (which certainly isn't a sure thing, the nausea from this pile o' dung made it really hard to focus) this is a documentary of a guy making a documentary based upon a play based upon the life of the guy who made the film (yeah, he's making a movie about himself, reviewing his genius,; being certain it's coming up roses).
Also, his grand dad was perhaps killed by mafia. IN A COMPLETELY UNUSED, IRRELEVANT STORYLINE THAT NEVER GOES ANYWHERE!!! Ironically, this is the only storyline there is...
in the first review here on IMDb it was compared to a mix of "Capturing the Friedmans" and "The Godfather". I'd prefer to compare it to a Magic Mop infomercial and whatever movie a sh*t-flinging monkey would do, had he a $7 budget.
But: This might be worth watching, though. As a meta-performance it's quite great. Ricky Gervais wouldn't had done it better. When you realize that the huge production that's been talked about through out the film is a performance at the local high school... Priceless!!! Oh, yeah... The murky title "The Basemant" refers to a basement. Where they quite often had dinner.
