The Big Door Prize (2023– )

Enjoyable show with meaning
16 March 2024
This show is surprisingly good. They have taken an interesting premise and executed it well.

The characters are well developed - I liked them and cared for them. The relationships are well developed.

The life potential machine has a deeper meaning and they have developed it well.

Moreover the small town life has been presented nicely as well - the show is a good watch just on that alone and then add the meaning of the machine which makes it a pretty good show!

I also liked the fact that they conveyed good values, have positive role models etc. So its a good watch for older teens as well.

Can't wait for the second season!

The Orville (2017–2022)

Very nice take on a startrek-like series
19 August 2022
Orville is pretty good esp with Season 3. Initially in season 1 I thought it was immature and was unnecessarily trying to be funny. But in Season 3, the show has matured - it can handle tricky issues with aplomb - every episode also deals with a soft emotional / relationship issue along with thrill.. it shows maturity on the level of StarTrek-TNG.

I just hope they will keep making more and more seasons of this!!

Love this movie!
22 September 2019
This movie has everything - it has humor, it has romance, but the best thing it has is positive messages about life, holding your principles dear, honesty, love etc

Just love this movie. It leaves you happier and warm - and gives you energy to pursue your dreams!

Must watch.

Good sci-fo series after the first couple episodes
4 August 2019
First 2 episodes are bad (where the inter-character behaviors seem made up and unrealistic); after that the show stabilizes and builds up. It uses good science concepts and has a good story. Second half of the season is much better done. Looking forward to second season.

Love this show
8 March 2019
I have watched all episodes of all Star Trek series except for DS9.

And I love this show. I am so glad that it got made.

This show has all the best features of trek, the adventure, the grandeur, the science, exploration, etc. But it also has an amazing storyline.

Both seasons were good and but season 2 is even better!

Amazing show with high ratings for everything
3 September 2018
This show has everything that a sci-fi wants. And it shows it from a family angle which is very unique.

Great thrill. Constant on the edge action.

Great story. The aspects about the Robot, Dr Smith, family relationships, etc were explored in some depth.

Good ideas!

Great adventure!

Great characters! They are well developed and very likeable.

Jericho (2006–2008)

Awesome show!
20 December 2013
Jericho is a gripping, tense, suspense-filled show. There are no bad episodes. Each one is very well done. Moves the story along while providing character development. You care about the characters. You care about the story. You'll love the town of Jericho. I miss the town as though I am from that town!

A little more violent than I would like it to. But still amazing.

I am surprised the second season was so short, and that it was cut there. I would like to see at least a few more seasons!

I am amazed at why such great shows are canceled early. Firefly is another example.

Pretty awful! :-(
24 April 2010
This movie is now one of my top 3 worst films I have ever seen.

Each scene was artificial, the jokes were disastrous. Instead of laughing, we were crying. We had to leave at the intermission time, because this was not just going anywhere. The emotions shown were awful and no scene was believable.

Please please avoid. Better use of time is to watch Paresh Rawal's previous comedy films than to cry watching this.

Acting wise Paresh Rawal was just about okay. The other actors were also so so.

But the main problem is the script and directing.

Pinjar (2003)
9/10
Excellent!
16 February 2004
Pinjar is a genuinely good film, with great acting, good narrative, good presentation, touching emotions, etc.

It seems to me that the quality of films that Bollywood is producing is quite improving these days, and this film is one evidence.

No Bollywood movie that I can remember of made such an impact on me - I was literally thinking about the movie for hours - marvelling at the various emotional situations that test the human in a human.

The film rests on the great acting of Urmilla Matondkar, and also some from Manoj Bajpai. Urmilla plays a girl in North India in the background of the partition, and all troubles seem sweet if compared with the problems she happens to face.

A must-see film. A technically superior Bollywood product, which I feel is comparable to the best movies coming out of other countries in the world.

Dhoop (2003)
Slow, but Good!
9 February 2004
This movie does the same thing as a typical Indian movie - exposing the corrupted government officials in India. But what makes this movie different is that it is based on a true story.

With solid acting from Om Puri and Revati and its moving true story, you have a movie that is slow-movie but really worth watching.

The only thing I did not like about the movie was its numerous songs spread over the movie, many times seem to just thrown in.

7.5/10. (Quite Good)

Donnie Darko (2001)

Wonderful, do not forget to read the book
27 July 2003
Richard Kelly, a 1997 graduate of the University of Southern California's Cinema School, writes and directs Donnie Darko, his debut film.

At a small age of 26, Richard Kelly creates a wonderful, gripping film which has taken a place on my top 20 list.

Do not forget to look at the "Philosophy of Time Travel" 6-page book given in the DVD as a special feature; only after reading that can you come close to understanding the movie as it was designed. (If you search on yahoo/google for "Philosophy of Time Travel" you will find that book easily)

My rating: 8/10: A very good film.

Nice for the Thoughtful, Bad for the Rest
12 May 2003
There are three different ways a movie can be evaluated according to me: 1. How the viewer "feels" during and immediately after seeing the movie. 2. The art, skill and talent put into making the movie. 3. How it changes the viewers of the film in the long run from the aspect of knowledge, understanding, perspective, behavior, morality, culture, etc.

An important question is - which one of those questions is the most important?

The movie critics mostly assume the second question to be the most important. A typical film viewer assumes the first one to be the most important. What do you think about the importance of the third?

From the 1st questions point of view, the movie will cause the viewer to be "highly disturbed". Many people will simply reject this film, and will not even be able to sit through the complete movie. I myself had to garner up lots of courage to just keep my hand from pushing the stop button throughout the movie. The movie is "real bad" if you think the answer to the first question is the most important for you, and hence you should stay away from the movie.

From the 2nd question point of view, although I do not have much knowledge of film critiquing, I can estimate that the movie is quite good artistically. The movie's direction, music, special effects, screenplay is quite good.

However, the 3rd question is the most interesting for a movie like Natural Born Killers.

The intention of the movie, as the makers of the movie would want to emphasize, is to make the general public realize that proper "culturing" of kids, young people is necessary for the society to sustain itself. If there is no concept of morality induced into people, especially when they are young, they may grow up into anti-social elements. And moreover, the current state of American Society is lacking the culturing exactly which is essential.

So the questions raised by this movie in my mind were:- Is it necessary to have a proper culturing of the masses for them to behave morally? Or will they "just understand"? Is the right to expression of ideas by way of showing violence on the TV screen and the big screen more important than telling people what is right and wrong and how to behave yourself? Is the media' role more as a user ratings seeker or as communicator of culture?

Thus there seems to some interesting thought provoking stuff out here (the questions are not new - but it still raises questions - which most movies just don't do), but there exists a PRIMARY PROBLEM with the movie which is quite obvious.

The film might be thought provoking in the right sense to only a small fraction of the viewers - perhaps those who are willing to think. However, for the vast majority of the audience, the film may have the opposite effect to that what it wants to have. It will teach them violence. The film will serve to do exactly what it tries to say as "wrong": it will show audience that violence is not a wrong thing - violence is normal.

This is a very strong negative point of the movie.

Comparison with Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange: The Stanley Kubrick Masterpiece was way above this movie.

1: Disturbing, though much less than Natural Born Killers.

2: Artistically much better than Natural Born Killers.

3: Clockwork Orange raised more deeper and more novel questions than Natural Born Killers.

The questions directly raised by Clockwork Orange in my mind were: What is the basis of morality? Why should you behave morally? Why are most people in the world behaving more or less morally? How would you convince a person to behave morally? Is simply establishing association between immorality and feeling sick enough? Is simply establishing association between immorality and getting punished enough? Is morality only important for not getting punished or is there something higher? Is establishing an association between immoral behavior and feeling sick equivalent to convincing him what is right and wrong? Is religion only for convincing people to behave morally? Can religion give a logically sound reason for behaving morally?

Why should I care about others? Is today's politics only about trying to win votes, or they really try to think about the people?

And the basic problem present with Naturally Born Killers that it may actually germinate violence in the viewers is not present in Clockwork Orange because Clockwork Orange shows more cultured and less anti-social behavior than harmful.

In Conclusion, watch Clockwork Orange(my rating 10/10), and avoid Naturally Born Killers(my rating 7/10).

Perfect Action Thriller
26 June 2002
The Bourne Identity, thought not the best, certainly qualifies as a "good" film.

Those that are action thriller fans, should not miss it. Others will also enjoy it.

The action and direction of the movie are quite good.

The story is about a person suffering from amnesia. But he is not a routine fellow, something different. And that makes it more entertaining.

Its not a do-not-miss movie, but is certainly good viewing, without doubt.

Can I give this 10.5/10?????
20 April 2002
I feel this is going to change my life from now on.

Who does not like feeling good? And this is one of the best movies to be made in the feel-good category.

I think that everybody in the world should see this movie. All of us, 6 billion people, should see it together - on one large screen. That would be just wonderful.

Well, nuff said, if you havent watched the movie yet, make sure this is the next movie you watch.

I think they should make more of this kind of movies. These films are a lot better than the best dark ones like A Clockwork Orange, Requiem for a Dream, etc.

Should be in the IMDB top 10, I wonder why its not. Deserves higher than 10 out of 10.
