Napoleon (2023)
Poor... A truly terrible depiction
Just left the theatre after watching this. Had incredible expectations about this, and the trailers were incredibly amusing. However, the movie is everything but that. It depicts him as a childish man, very emotionally dependent on Josephine, and gets to the point of justifying Napoleon's successive returns to France due to Josephine. Historically speaking it is an incredible dud/failure, only getting things somewhat right on Waterloo and firing cannons at a Royalist Mob. The 2002 movie was bread without salt, but at least got the fundamental facts right and provided an overview of Napoleon's rise to power and accomplishments even as a politician. Looking at both, wouldn't it be possible to have a great 4 hour movie depicting him winning at Rivoli, Marengo, Austerlitz and Friedland, followed by his Russian downfall and defeat at Leipzig, with a twist of romance and even intrigue and politics while staying true to the facts? Once again, history can be much more exciting than any 'cannons shooting pyramids' idea.
Peregrinação (2017)
Almost unwatchable
The Story of Fernão Mendes Pinto could be one of the greatest Hollywood stories if well produced and spinned. This one was made by Portuguese filmmakers, with obvious financial limitations.
Even so, the movie is almost unwatchable, as it is boring, poorly produced, and with parts of monologues and a few dialogues which are completely uninteresting unless you are an historian.
The only interesting thing is the added music, which resembles the style of musician Fausto, and can easily take us back to the 1500s and the struggles of the Portuguese during the carreira da India. The main actor was also good and is not to blame for this terrible cinematic piece.
To sum up, reading the book is 10000x more enjoyable.
