Rocky (1976)
Amazing
I first watched Rocky when I was around 8 I guess. Ireally liked it, but at the time III would have been my favorite, because of Mr. T.
It was later in my life though, that I realized the complexity of the first film. This was not just a "boxing movie". It was a loves story, and underdog story, a story of beating the odds.
Sylvester Stallone was brilliant in this role. He really showed what an actor he could be, before being typecast in lesser quality roles. His emotion was brilliant. the rest of the cast was just as superb, really making me feel everything that was going on.
I cried at several times during this film, both out of pain and joy. I think the ending was magnificent, because it showed that the winner of the fight wasn't important. He'd went the distance and won the girl, so he was the victor in life.
also, Rocky has one of the best scores in cinema history. the theme is recognizable, and the feelings some scenes had, just through music, was breathtaking.
I watch this movie all the time, and I wouldn't want to be without it.
Cry Wolf (2005)
when good premises go horrible awry
I was basically dragged to this movie by one of my friends and didn't really want to see it that badly. That might have affected my vote slightly, but it doesn't change the fact that I didn't enjoy this movie.I was never scared, or even tense. I was barely even interested. The only time I jumped was only slightly because there was a loud noise, and I had completely zoned out, it was almost like being asleep and someone grabbing you to wake you up. Not the type of scare a movie would want.
The movie had a terrific premise, but something went wrong with the execution. The acting was decent at best. The ending was pretty good, but by the time it got there, I no longer cared about what was going to happen. The movie was incredibly predictable, and we pretty much knew what was going to happen. Two of my friends figured out the ending (basically)within about 10 minutes.
That's not saying this is the worst horror movie ever, but it was certainly not great. By today's standards, it was good. But today's standards are incredibly low, and most teens today do not know a good movie. They are taught to believe that stupid movies are good, then good movies go over their heads. I've seen movies that have truly scared me, and if I want good horror, I shall watch them. But I will not watch this again.
I suggest, if you really want to see it, wait till it is in a second run theater if you have one. If not, wait till it's on DVD and rent it. It's not worth the price of a theater ticket.
The Eighteenth Angel (1997)
fantastic work of art
I first saw this movie a couple of years ago. I liked walking around blockbuster and renting movies that had cool boxes. That's not always the best way to do it, but in this case, it was. The Eighteenth Angel is one of the best movies I've ever seen. The plot turns are exquisite, and i just loved it when I discovered the meaning of the title. I don't want to give away to much but I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has not seen it.
The Asphyx (1972)
a true masterpiece of the mind
Immortality is a virtue that man has sought after since the dawn of history and now one man has found it. I originally rented this movie because, quite frankly, I was intrigued by the tag line. And boy did my interest pay off. I found one of the best films I have ever seen. From the beginning that you won't understand until they end to the subtle plot turns along the way. This film raises the questions " Once you've obtained immortality, what's next?" and "In the end, is it really worth it?"
