Ceviz (2020)
Walnut is like a silent scream.
An artistic presentation of a very familiar story that smells of Anatolia. The director has worked well on the metaphors specific to the east. Child brides are the clearest indicator of our ignorance in the region. The director handled this issue in a naive way without breaking it. He embellished the subject with traditional myths such as cracking walnuts, pouring lead, sleeping with the mother-in-law until puberty. I also noticed the director's effort not to present this phenomenon as something unique to the countryside. The director presents provincial identities in a modern house. He also refers to the existence of "modern" family structures where the phenomenon exists. He combines modernity and tradition through costumes and space. I think this is also the director's way of saying "this issue is a mental issue before modernity or tradition". The phenomenon of child brides has always existed in this geography and as long as we struggle with these issues like a snake eating its tail, as long as we do not keep up with the times, in short, as long as we continue to be illiterate, it will continue to exist and find a place in cinema.
