Juno (2007)
We've been fooled!
I watched this film about a year ago, as that is when it came out here in England. I shan't lie, I thought it was delightful. It made me laugh and I concluded that Ellen Page was refreshing, as was the dialogue.
I watched it again about 2 months after, and once more a time after that. Both these times I was dumbstruck, to a point of speechlessness and my entire being, physically and mentally, had been lulled into an absolute state of rigid boredom.
Page and Cera act exactly the same character in every film they are in. And the 'refreshing' dialogue aforementioned, serves to do nothing but detract absolutely from a, frankly, wafer thin storyline. It's actually upsetting to identify what Juno fundamentally is. A marketing ploy. It was advertised as 'cool' and 'quirky' and 'indie', the movie's gone on to make close on 230 million US Dollars. I, like so many, was suckered in by this ploy. We've all been hoodwinked by Capitalism, Diablo Cody probably laughs herself to sleep, under her velvet sheets, on her gold plated bed frame.
Hunger (2008)
Fiercely Emotive
Hunger portrays an incredibly factually accurate account of the 1981 hunger strike, inducing equally potent amounts of empathy within the audience. Michael Fassbender provides a crafted and deep performance as Irish Republican Bobby Sands, reminiscent of Tom Hanks' weight loss in castaway, Fassbender's physical transformation is in no manner comparable, in that Fassbender's commitment surpasses Hanks tenfold. The attention and henceforth staggering accentuation of detail, enable greater comprehension and empathetic sentiment towards the characters. A solitary criticism remains ever-apparent in films of this persuasion, that is a lack of neutrality. I left the cinema looking to Join the 'RA
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006)
Unimpressive
Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny can be described best as limp. Hitherto Jack Black has over-acted insanely in the vast majority of his pictures. Now that may sound as though i am condemning him, it gets a laugh, and i am all for getting the laugh. However in Pick of Destiny, Black fails to get the laugh he so anxiously croons for. Supported discouragingly by Kyle Gass, a cameo by Ben Stiller is the only thing that alludes this is a high budget, Hollywood movie.
The plot line is wafer thin, I, like many, was expecting a quasi-factual account of the formation of the 'D', and when I realised this was not to be the case, I accepted that a fictional account of the formation could be equally as intriguing. I was wrong. Horribly wrong. The story staggers from scenario to scenario, leaving the irrefutable taste of dissatisfaction in the mouths of the audience members.
The conclusion (or perhaps more aptly, the dissolution) of the film features Black and Gass, having a rock battle with Satan himself. A resurrection perhaps of Tenacious D's earlier works (Tribute), in a sordid attempt to maintain any quality in the film. Whilst a die-hard 'D' fan would probably sorely disagree with me, the witless, embarrassingly unfunny and, in fact, musically challenged ending of the movie is a perfect encapsulation of what a waste of your time the preceding 1 1/4 hours were.
The only thing worse for Tenacious D than releasing this film, was releasing the soundtrack weeks before.
The Departed (2006)
Quality
very exciting, very unexpected ending. Scorsese back to his exhilarating excellency. Great performances, respectively, by DiCaprio, Nicholson, Damon and notably Wahlberg who was nominated for an Oscar for his input. Well delivered lines. well devised plot. Brilliant camera work. Awesome twist. Great acting. Great directing. DiCaprio's well crafted efforts compliment Damon's and Vice-Versa. While Jack Nicholson Proves once again, that he is on top of the acting hierarchy; he makes it hard to believe he has never acted as a gangster in the Irish Mob before in his career! Mark Wahlberg delivers the usual bad-boy performance, this time with a twist.
