Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Heavy on special effects, light on heart
Story was okay but there was so much more character development that could have happened. If you haven't seen the previous movie you wouldn't care about them at all and even having seen it, they were just flat and uninteresting. Even Phoebe's story was pretty lame. There were also lots of opportunities for humor that never really happened. Even the "old" ghostbusters didn't come through. The only really funny or entertaining parts were the marshmallow guys. Overall I felt like they concentrated too much on the ghost story and not enough on what makes you love the actual ghostbusters. There was so much great magic and attachment to the characters in Ghostbusters Afterlife and I was looking forward to this one but it just fell flat.
The Boys in the Boat (2023)
Good story but was lacking
I enjoyed remembering this story through the movie, along with the time period, and the can-do spirit of the rowing team, and it kept my interest. However, since the movie emphasized that the boat was 8 rowing as one, it was kind of weird that most of the movie focuses only on Joe and we really don't know hardly anything about the rest of the crew. I realize this was the perspective from which the book was written but it was a little odd.
Also, a few other unanswered questions, like the girlfriend is left hanging (does he go back to her?), what happens with the dad? I love this genre of movie, but the movie Miracle about the US Olympic hockey triumph over Russia was done better over all.
I also read the book but found myself skimming through large portions of it--way too much minutia that didn't help the story.
