The Fear (1995)

Could've Been MUCH Better If..
15 January 2024
.. it had been a bit more clear and to the point?

Without spoiling anything, I'll just say, I'm not usually very critical on that many horror movies, especially the 90's, since back then the genre was practically dying after the 80's slasher-craze, so I get it.. low-budget and very little to work with in terms of actors available and people who actually want to make it in the first place.

The fact of the matter is, if you're going to make a slasher film, have kills that matter. Most of the kills are either offscreen or just very sudden and not much gore. The "killer" in question is very odd and its motives aren't really established very well. Not even the ending can justify it. If he had a little more of a backbone in his kills, this movie could've been a hell of a lot better.

The actors / characters were just off. I couldn't tell if some of them were just bad at acting or the characters themselves were just meant to be stupid? A lot of "reveals" during the climax of the film, but they're so abrupt and "out there" that I just didn't care. Girlfriends not trusting their boyfriends / boyfriends not believing their girlfriends, "just because" is very lazy and terrible writing. Sure, there are some elements of the film that do in fact pay off, but overall, you just end up not giving a damn.

This film is epitome of a mediocre slasher flick of the mid-90's. Honestly, two films of the same genre come to mind that I think are superior despite also being low-budget and "not so great" and those are: Rumpelstiltskin (1995) and Sleepstalker (1995). Better villains, better characters and overall.. better pacing.

This film took a dump and never recovered.
