Jour de fête (1949)
Jour de Fete -
Just watched the colour version and it's absolutely delightful I had never seen it before and the Kodak stock gave a beautiful result
When one compares it to the garish results of Technicolor which followed... It seems that Jacques Tati filmed in both B&W and Colour but that the film labs were nor able to process the colour stock at the time.
There were certainly items in the colour version that I didn't remember from the B&W version
Papadopoulos & Sons (2012)
Reads like a dot to dot book
With the best will in the world, this is one of the worst films I have ever had the misfortune to sit through It was so utterly predictable that it was painful
The characters were stereotyped and the acting, if it can be called that, was wooden
I often wonder how some films ever get made. Who raises the finance for things like this? I'm sure that must be more worthy scripts out there just waiting for a bit of cash.
If you like touchy-feely, feel good films then this is for you. I might have liked this when I was younger but being both old and cynical, I found it ghastly
P'tit Quinquin (2014)
Strange and not "PC"
Some lovely scenery but it takes a long time to get into this film There are some very weird characters on display and I rather doubt that any British film company or Television broadcaster would have the courage to have made it. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to laugh at the characters or with them. It's now regarded as not being "PC" to laugh at the afflicted but it seems that's what is being asked to do. Some of the remarks regarding ethnic minorities are a trifle suspect; from a British point of view, that is. I can imagine Guardianistas getting in a flap about some remarks I'm still not sure what it was about but I still quite enjoyed it
Les visiteurs (1993)
"O-Kayyy!"
"O-Kayyy!" - one of the many phrases that stick in one's subconscious from this film; more on that shortly As every one else has pointed out, this a time travel film but it is done with such a deftness of touch that it makes some Hollywood offerings look clumsy by comparison. The film is subtitled but the translation have been done with terrific skill. My French is just about up to the dialogue and who-ever did the work has managed to keep the humour throughout. I like the film so much that I even bought a DVD copy of both Les Visiteurs 1 and 2. Returning to "O-Kayyy!" - I was on a very busy Aires de Service in France. I was asked if I wanted the water tap turning off and without thinking shouted the reply of "O-Kayyy!" Two French, One Dutch and one German couple all collapsed with laughter. Later that evening we ran Les Visiteurs 1 on the laptop for them. The result is four friendships that have endured for more than 6 years Yes, Les Visiteurs 1 and 2are truly cinematic greats
