Okay, where should I start off... I am a kid, and have read the book by Micheal Crichton. A few days ago I rented the movie (having been clueless to the existence of which until that moment) and, yesterday, sat down to watch it, great expectations.
Boy, was I disappointed. Having thought the book was amazing, I went to the video store thinking, "They'd better not have changed a THING," even though I knew that it couldn't be done. But honestly, the movie took my expectations and buried them in the middle of nowhere!
First of all, some MAJOR inconsistencies to the book! I know, as a complete book-to-movie viewer, that you can't keep everything true to the book, but REALLY. I don't want to bore you with all my nitpicking, so you might as well skip the next paragraph. Thank you.
*****WARNING: HERE BE SPOILERS!!DON'T READ THIS PARAGRAPH IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK/SEEN THE MOVIE!!!!*****
Okay, first of all, Norman's (Hoffman) last name is Johnson, NOT Goodman. It's Beth HALPERN, not HALPERIN. I understand if for some reason, Mr Crichton wanted the names changed, but otherwise, the people should at LEAST be able to keep the names right! Two of the characters, Tina Chan and Levy (if you've ever read the book, you know who I mean), are missing ENTIRELY. Teeny Fletcher did not die first due to jellyfish, it was Jane Edmunds. Levy was found where Edmunds is in the movie, and Fletcher just off and disappeared along with Barnes. Of course, they were both dead too. Tina died during the fire, Ted was dragged into the ocean by the giant squid.
Okay, sorry I just had to lecture you all there, but honestly, I see no reason that they couldn't have kept those little consistencies. I mean, TWO MISSING CHARACTERS?? Come on.
Anyway, that put aside, the acting was so-so. I think Sharon Stone was great as Beth; She was just as I had imagined from the book (Although I was disappointed that they didn't include her slightly deranged "Norman, don't get near the habitat!! I have explosives rigged up all around here, Norman, don't come any closer! You'll die, Norman!! Die!!" speech at the end.). Dustin Hoffman was okay as Norman JOHNSON (But I guess that rating is from my imagining him before as something like my old science teacher, especially with all the psychology speeches) The character of Harry was great, Samuel L. Jackson did a great job.
Overall, I had a good time with this movie, although it didn't NEARLY live up to my expectations. If you haven't read the book, you might find it interesting; if you've read the book, don't bother; it will be a disappointment.
