Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Not at all as good as advertised
I've been looking forward to this movie since so many people and critics, whose opinions I trust think this is such a great piece of art. While I did laugh a few times, and can give it a six out of 10 because the acting is really nice, the story is just...... How do I put this... Too hard to follow... With some of the best parts being meaningless to the overall plot... Which, based on the way that it ended, apparently everything all together, and all at once was meaningless to the story based on the way it ended . If you dig kung fu and fight scenes, or somehow feel a multiverse connection because of superhero movies you have enjoyed, you may not come away from this with as sour a taste as me. But when the most profound scene includes two rocks conversing...
He Was a Quiet Man (2007)
Office Space it's not
There are some themes common in this from Office Space-- lets call it Office Space on acid
Karla (2006)
A Hidden Gem
I'm very surprised by the negative reviews here in the low five star rating. Laura Prepon is confident, convincing, and conveys the thought provoking reality of the real Karla. Misha Collins is convincing as well, despite some Shatner level overacting... but as this is a true story, he conveys the depravity of his true life character. The movie holds up well, despite the fact that I'm seeing it 14 years after it was made. My guess is that some of the negativity on IMDB and critics about this movie, is that Prepon starred in this before her acclaim as a dramatic actress (Orange is the New Black) rather than a comedic one as she played on that 70s show, was thus far unproven. I truly believe that if this movie were released in 2020 that combined with Laura's reputation, and the fine true life representation as an actress here, that instead of 5's, I'd go so far as to say she'll have some buzz for a statue. A hidden gem!
The Little Hours (2017)
You think it can't be that bad with all those great comics
With this cast it just HAS to have some redeeming qualities... a few laughs? It's just plain disappointing. Save yourself.
Blinded by the Light (2019)
You'll Laugh, Cry, Sing, Cringe,Hate Racism, and LOVE Blinded By The Light
If you know me, you know I am going to like a movie where 17 Springsteen songs are front and center, his lyrics fly across the screen, and characters even speak some lines as Bruce lyrics. To set up the heartwarming ending, a lot of story and character exposition dominated the first thirty minutes---maybe I was just anxious to get to the Bruce. And it is A LOT of Bruce. Even if you know there is going to be an overload of music and fan girl level adulation, it's still even more than you can believe. Even more than a die hard Springsteen fan might be comfortable with. By the end of the credits, the E-Street Band should have come out to take a bow.
The movie's main themes are the conflict between father and son (a longtime Springsteen theme) and the subject of racism in Maggie Thatcher and Ronald Reagan backdrop with some violent skinheads thrown in. Where I was most moved was the use of the song "The Promised Land," to exemplify Javed's evolution into adulthood and being able to take the reigns of his own life away from his father.
"Mister I ain't a boy, no, I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land"
Additionally, Clarence Clemons sax and Roy Bittans piano from Jungleland punctuate a violent skinhead scene where London 1987 looks an awful lot like Charlottesville 2017. Powerful!
Where I cringed - characters speaking their lines as Springsteen lyrics. But you'll get over that, and the Bollywood choreography that will remind you a bit of the TV show Glee, because as a whole, this is a story that's as heartwarming and feel good as anything I've seen in awhile.
Jimmy V said "If you laugh, you think and you cry, that's a full day." You'll experience all of that in droves.
Springsteen on Broadway (2018)
Worth every minute
Springsteen, as a songwriter and author is carefully constructive with words, sentences, ideas, characters, consequences, and stories. His spoken content, when colored by instrumental piano or guitar musical accompaniment, elevates the moving and poetic to perfection. The songs are chosen for this audience as opposed to the arenas, and weave a story that while it is definitely all about Bruce, the kid who grows up to be a rock star, is also completely relatable to all because it's about mothers, fathers, family, fatherhood, purpose, and being American. I advise you to Listen carefully, pay attention to every word, every lyric, and every elicited emotion. This performance will resonate with me forever not just as a way to know Bruce's story, but to see the correlation to mine and everyone I know.
Escape from L.A. (1996)
I have a new worst movie I have ever seen
About the writing of the plot of this movie, my only question would be this.....If these ideas actually MADE the movie, I would give a million dollars to know what writers ideas were balled up and thrown in the trashcan. As snake SURFS to safety, he just so happens to meet up with the bad guy, who turns out to be the good guy, then the bad guy, then the good guy again and on and on........ Only redeeming quality of this movie happens in the first two minutes when we meet the religious dicator/president who has moved the capitol from DC to LYNCHBURG VIRGINIA. (who could it be????_
