Unearthed (2007)
Ever heard of tyranids ?
I usually don't post reviews but since there was no comment yet about the creature I had to make one.And well people who already watched the movie may learn something about the creature they didn't know.
I found the movie a bit boring, it was dark all the time and the action scenes felt like a movie trailer, a flash of action here and there, a lot of it but always very fast and where it seems like you miss half the action. Something just didn't "work" in this movie for me, I have nothing against simple stories or the characters or the acting or even the creature FXs but the movie in the end isn't that good sadly.
!!! HUGE SPOILER !!!! The whole concept of the creature has been entirely copied from a tabletop game called warhammer 40'000 made by Games Workshop.I'm not an expert considering I only read the "tyranids codex" for fun but I can tell you that the creature is some kind of "Genestealer" from the Tyranids alien race in that game (there are many different kind of tyranids and it may be closer to another unit type) I don't know if the movie producers ever mentioned any link to this but it's obvious, the "gene collecting" goal the scientist explain in the movie, the creature design which looks exactly has the miniatures in the tabletop game and even the burrowing worms that are shot by the alien by some kind of bio-gun.
The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
action more action and that's it
not "too" sci-fi gunfights (human guns shoots bullets and rockets) and hand-to-hand,knives combat sequences, not much background or explanations about who,where,why,etc... this movie is all about Riddick kicking and shooting everyone. There's only action here, there's not a lot of story and if you didn't watch "dark fury" before you won't even understand why everyone seem to know Riddick as most of the characters are introduced in the animation movie. I personally think that the evil necromongers had a great design but looked far too weak for an army that would conquer the universe or maybe it was Riddick that was a little bit too good, anyway they looked very easy to beat and this won't make them remembered.
If you want a good action-packed entertaining movie Chronicles of Riddick is great if you are looking for more you'll be disappointed.
Virus (1980)
don't expect much
If you think this movie is gonna be another of those "still watchable and fun" italian zombie-movies like zombie flesh eaters 2(zombi 3) or zombi holocaust, think twice because it is definitely weaker and boring. Too many wildlife and natives stock shots really ruin the movie and seem to be inserted almost randomly in the movie just to make it last longer.
Action scenes are really amateurish, zombies goes from the nicely done and rotten to the "my face is paint in black" type.
Some scenes looks like dawn of the dead some like cannibal holocaust, some like zombie 2 but sadly without all the good things we find in those movies there is not one single scene that makes it worth to watch.
La beuze (2003)
Funnier than more expensive french movies
Frankly I was expecting the worst after seeing what the others frenchTV-comical-show-guys had played in like the movie "la tour montparnasse infernal" and all the latest awful and not funny at all movies like "Taxi 3" or the latest movie by the "Les Inconnus".
But what a big surprise, the stupid wanna be disco-singer story is just a very small part of the movie despite what the music video clip and trailer may look like but instead there is just some kind of police-love story with a less childish humor than in most french movies and the end is one of the best I've seen recently.
I've seen 17 movies in 4 days recently and I don't remember even one where I couldn't forsee the end after 30 minutes but with this one...I could never think of what was coming next. There are places where the pace goes down a little but nothing boring.
The acting was not so great I admit but for a first movie with "beginning" (TV people) actors and non-actors guest stars I have never seen one this good !
If you have some "smoking" knowledge or friends and/or like Michael Youn and Vincent Desagnat, are let's say between 16-30 years and want some pure fun watch this movie, it IS entertaining and it IS funny...but beware because the story is pretty "high" if you see what I mean ;) no need to smoke to see weird things lol
I WANT TO SEE "la beuze 2" ! :)
Swiri (1999)
Could have been better
The acting seemed good to me in spite of the fact that's it's only the second Korean movie I saw (2009 Lost memories was the first one) so I'm not a Korean-movies pro. 7/10
The story was so-so nothing really good, a simple terrorist, good vs bad story, not a really innovative scenario and you are sure to guess the ending after watching the movie for 15 minutes. The pseudo-romance lacks everything, the lovers doesn't look that much in love and the fact that those lovers look more like strangers make this part far from being as appealing as the romance in John Woo's "the killer" 3/10
The action scenes were very irrealistic and what is the most awful is when one guy totally uncovered straight in the middle of an opened door kills everyone with his simple automatic pistol and 10 swats with sub machine guns can't hit him at all, ridiculous...I tought the infinite ammo-invulnerable man days were finished but it looks like not in Korea. 5/10
To be honest my ratings wouldn't have been so low if the directing was good but sadly after watching this movie I found myself with a big headache, most of the movie is shot like if the cameras were mounted on jumping kangaroos or less exagerating, I should say that the cameraman was running like hell holding it's camera in his hands...the camera is going in every direction during the action scenes and if some directors can master this kind of film technic Swiri's one definitely does not, it's moving even when it shouldn't.I'm watching lots of asian movies and lot's of kung-fu one so I'm accustomed to frenzied movies but in this one camera movements are badly used.
The movie would had his chances without this " non-stop shaking picture" but as it is this movie is just average,I would recommend you to see "2009 Lost memories" instead the scenario is more interesting and the action is better directed and more realistic.
Stranded (2001)
Nothing to see here
The acting is pretty weak even if there are some good lines the actors hardly looks like they are in danger at all. The main character is played by the director herself who is really bad at acting and thus will make you fear each one of her appearance. The plot has a lot of holes and there are tons of details and errors that make the movie completely unbelievable and loosing it's appeal... All in all I had the feeling of watching a very long and boring "4th dimension" episode and I was really disappointed with this movie.
Not even worth a rent..Try "red planet" instead it is perhaps too much "hollywoodian" compared to "stranded" but it is the same kind of story with better acting a better scenario and more FX..better that's the word.
Perhaps my expectations were too great, frankly I don't see the point in watching this movie it has nothing that hasn't already been seen in a better way.
Dagon (2001)
The best Lovecraft-based movie
I recommend this movie to every Lovecraft fan because I doubt you will ever see one that is closer to the Cthulu mythos.
Thanks to the "fantastic factory" we are available to finally see something close to the mythos, it seems making something else than zombies or vampires is not welcome even in the horror movie-scene.Stuart told us that the movie was too weird and no one wanted to produce it..
I won't discuss the acting because you can like it or not but I must say that the atmoshpere of oppression and ineluctability that is in almost each Lovecraft story is well restored in Dagon, the "deep ones" are almost perfect there are some nice gory passages and the story is very dark.
Scenario is a mix of two H.P.Lovecraft stories "Dagon" and "Shadow over Innsmouth" and well they made quite a successful mix with those two stories.
This is the only good "old school" (zombies, monsters) horror-movie I've seen in a movie-theater since a long time that is not supposed to be funny and is really horrific.
