Hotaru no haka (1988)
A work of art
First of all I'd like to explain why I gave this film a 10. I don't rate in comparison to other films because I take each film on its own, and I couldn't fault this film one bit. I was thinking of rating it a 9 just because it was a bit short in length but then again I thought that it was that good that I wanted more. The animation is amazing. You forget that it's just drawings one after another, and then you see something so breathtaking and you realise why the creators decided to make this an anime. To be honest I was expecting nothing less from studio Ghibli. The story is haunting in its simplicity. They are right to say its one of the best anti-war movies of all time. The creators don't even try to present the then Japanese empire as something magnificent, on the contrary. They give us the raw nature of the human kind and most of all the unspoilt love that can only be found between siblings. I watched the subtitled version of the film. It's truly worth it. The laughter of the small girl still haunts me and I'd love to watch this film again and again
Children of Men (2006)
Brilliant cinematography!
I really liked this film. It was realistic, cynic, a little cruel and the direction was one of the best i've ever seen. Hand held shots really work in this film. It really makes you feel a part of whatever happens in the film. There were some really long shots too. All the crew deserves a huge applause for this, it must have been really hard to achieve so realistically. It kinda reminded me of '28 days later', well, without the zombies. I kept feeling that I was actually there, and i was overwhelmed by the sense of reality. Both films contained little soundtrack or background music and that really works in both cases
I highly recommend this title.
U2 3D (2007)
Just wish it lasted longer!
I am not a huge U2 fan, I know 3-4 songs of theirs, can sing along 2 of those, but this movie was AMAZING! The concert was brilliant, the direction was amazing, everything was well thought of, really worth it actually! I just wish it was more than 80mins, I really enjoyed it.
The new Real D technology is really great, giving beautiful stereoscopic vision, with images extending in front and behind the screen. Just try to sit as close to the screen as possible, and you'll be trying to touch Bono's face or grab his microphone from his hand!
So, this movie made me want to come home and order some U2 albums, I was singing the "Beautiful day" all the way to home, and I've been told that I had this silly smile throughout the screening. All in all, I really enjoyed it and i definitely suggest to all U2 fans, and not only, to go and see this concert!
