If you enjoyed the first two you'll enjoy this one as well
24 March 2023
I almost didn't watch this one because of the bad reviews. Glad I ignored them. This is a prequel to 1 & 2. The end of two asked "why are there so many demons in the mountains" and this goes into answering that question for us. The creators also wanted to explore another Taiwanese folk tale or urban legend while at the same time building off what they've already created. It was a great idea, it made the film feel fresh while still looking for ways things will end up tying into the first two films. We get a lot more backstory on the mountains, the Tiger Temple introduced in part 2 and the early life of the father of the missing girl in part 2 who's also the Tiger Lord. Characters from the first film appear in the credits and after credits scenes so stick around for those. I hope this encourages more people to finish the trilogy. A review complained about the cgi but it looked like the same quality as the first two. No idea what they meant by that. I also hope they continue the story at some point while exploring more folk tales or urban legends. Really enjoyed this series.

I almost turned it off, stick around for the second half!
22 January 2023
This movie starts off messy. The story, acting, characters, felt so poorly created as a horror fan I couldn't see its value. But after we get comfortable in the morgue and the chase is on it picks up. By the end it had my full attention. I really thought they messed up with the lead actress initially but now I get why she was hired. Young lady can scream and showed excellent range in the second half. Displayed great rage. Not just the damsel I thought it was setting her up for. I could see her growing as a scream queen. Hope to see her in more films. Part of why I wanted to stick things out was Jerry O' Connell and he's a great villian in this. I've seen him pop up in a few horrors before and he always entertains. I grew up with his films so I may have a bias admittedly. By the end they do an excellent job at creating a monster. I could see a sequel happen with his character. I'm not a big gore fan, it's not too excessive but body parts are involed so don't be too caught off guard. There's not a lot of bad language. Because I'd read the negative reviews I thought it was worth sharing a positive experience. First half I was going to give it a 4, enjoyed the second so much it earned two points.

Harland Manor (2021)

Average Haunted Film
22 October 2022
It's not as bad as some others have written. People are overly harsh on horror more than any other genre. I love horror, love scary buildings, ghosts stories, people getting picked off one by one; truly not hard to please. With all that said this movie is very average. The acting was believable, the characters were interesting and the lore behind the manor was developed well.

However and maybe it was for budget reasons but this movie leans a bit too far into the drama and not enough into the horror. It was about 50 minutes in before we were done with the drama, which isn't too above average but it did feel dragged out. Maybe it just wasn't interesting enough to care. The movie wouldn't have changed if they cut out the divorce storyline.

That aside the spirits themselves were cool. Not a lot of graphics to be critical of, more make up work and audio. Also not a complaint.

Personally I enjoyed House on Haunted Hill, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. Hell House LLC, Interior 2014, the sequel The Devil's Toy Box 2017, or The House on Haunted Hill 2018, Eloise 2016, St. Osmund's 2013 to name a few more than Harland Manor. Though some of those are found footage films and I know many ppl take issue with those so be warned.

It's not that bad for a found footage fan
4 June 2022
As someone else said first half is documentary style then switches to found footage. I love found footage so I seek these out. This is currently on Tubi. Enjoyed the acting, characters weren't annoying af, setting was cool, no jump scares but it was spooky, def horror and quality generally speaking was well-done. The story isn't anything too unique but I did want to see where things went. Imo the climax left me a bit wanting and that's where I get the impression budget was an issue. It isn't awful but I likely won't watch it a second time. However if you're a FF fan like myself it is worth your time. We have seen far worse.

Listen to the bad reviews
23 November 2021
I love found footage films. Favorite genre really and not hard to please but this film was pretty hard to enjoy. As others have mentioned after the characters are introduced you can skip sections of the film and not miss anything. If you watch the beginning, a bit of the middle and the last 20 or so you've seen what you need to. Was the ending worth it? No. But what I found really awful was how the characters were written. The way the lead female was directed to behave was atrocious. Nails on a chalkboard to listen to. She was awful. In ways you could understand her concern over a child in danger but that does not excuse her maddening harping, complaining, whining, etc. She made this movie the reason I was skipping forward to get to the end. I don't blame the actress, she was written or directed that way. It was awful.

If you enjoy found footage it's not that bad
25 January 2021
I've been on a found footage kick lately. They're often low budget and can have some rough acting so maybe that's why these things don't bother me as much as it seems to bother many other reviewers here.

For a movie I found on Youtube I had a good time and don't regret watching it. I wouldn't pay to see it in theater of course but there's plenty of horror I've watched I wouldn't but that doesn't mean the film was awful. There's not a lot of gore or that type of horror but some satan worshipping with a mystery of what's going on with Lucas definitely justifies putting it in the genre. Other reviewers kept mentioning the twist at the end and that pushed me to go ahead and try it despite the many 1 and 2 stars.

If you like found footage you won't hate this as much as some are implying. It's no blockbuster but who cares. "The characters are unlikeable" but that's pretty normal for this genre so what? I was entertained the whole ride it doesn't have to be the scariest film to justify a 4 or 5 star rating. Horror like comedy is very subjective but I think some can be overy critical.

Decent movie for what it is. A thriller.
23 July 2015
Why House at the End of the Street is labeled under horror at all is beyond me. Looking for horror I decided to try this out. If I'd known I was watching just a thriller I wouldn't have felt unnecessary disappointment.

Jennifer Lawrence and Max Thieriot(Bates Motel) do a fine job in their performances even though you can tell they haven't quite earned their acting chops yet. The story moves pretty fast with not much low time but with no passion from the director the film feels copy and pasted mostly.

My biggest gripe would have to be that the most intriguing information we learn is saved for what feels like an after thought. It's very out of place.

If you like thrillers and don't come in with high expectations you'll have a good time.
