Breaking Bad: Felina (2013)
The most divine intervention.
Contains spoilers, heavy spoilers, and nothing else.
I think nobody gets it, or I have serious issues with my perception.
After the car keys drop into Walter's lap, things take a religious turn. God has spoken to Walt. Walt earned his redemption. After that everything goes smooth and easy. Try to do right things, and even the most flawed, childish plans will work perfectly. Of course Gretchen and Elliot will deliver the money, of course everybody in the nazi compound will gather in the same room, and they will get Jesse there too. Of course everybody bad, except Todd and his uncle will be shot to dead. Then Walt takes his revenge (or delivers punishment), and Jesse punishes Todd. Walt dies at the right spot, Jesse comes clean (it was Heisenberg cooking all along), health nut Lydia is punished accordingly. There is no loose ends at all, none. They deliberately doesn't show the aftermath. Because when you accept the divine intervention, there is nothing left to worry about.
Walt talked to the God. He was in his lowest, weakest. He was full of hatred. And god descended upon him. I don't mean he just believes that like some lunatic, it really happened. That must be actually happened to everything to be worked out so well. After that he is serene, changed man. He does what he is told.
I am not a believer myself. But this is the only way for me to accept what happened in the Felina. Otherwise this is most unfulfilled and weak, crappy finale of all time.
Avatar (2009)
If your new bride is blue, just borrow some unobtainium
I rated this movie 3 out of 10. But it deserves at least an 8. I just wanted to protest. A nice movie, a good movie indeed. Very rugged. Flowing. I'm not being sardonic, I really liked it. But its simple, even naive. Simple characters, simple story. One less dimension in the movie, an extra dimension in script won't hurt anybody. A great opportunity wasted I guess. Many talented people, worked hard for many years. So I wanted some depth. I expected something more than a 3D action thriller. Dancing with wolves did have something fresh, something nice. Discrict 9 has xenophobia, racism, bureaucracy, cold corporate mind, and action, friendship, delicious aliens, effects and some gore. It was fresh and surprising and new. Avatar is just big, simple, nice.
I love American S.F. writers. Greg Bear, Theodore Sturgeon, and many more wrote books full of hive minds, planet sized intellects, and with some solid (fictional) science background too. Hall Clement's creatures, P.K.Dicks twisted visions, U.K.le Guin's poetic depth, they are truly amazing. SF opens ones mind. Good SF is also good philosophy, good literature, and it is always good for me. They are hundreds of amazingly disturbing, mind boggling, incredible books out there, but no one dares to touch them. I guess they are too complicated. Ot they prefer not to ruin them, yet.
The story is, an evil, extortionist, capitalist, militarist world company decides to rape a magical planet with good scenery, full of half naked, very long legged girls, (all of them happen to love long walks in the woods, and on the woods, paragliding and horseback riding). But handful of humans seeing the error of their ways decides to lead them to an all out war against invasion. Their strategy consist of throwing things and ramming if possible, shrieking when all else fails. Not very Clausewitzian, and it does not work. But this planet has a hive mind, an alien Gaia, (which has perverse vision of evolution, very fond of feathers and lights, has a touch screen planet-wide, with built in internet). I don't know why but I can picture Mrs. Eywa knitting very bright colored sweaters. When Gaia intervenes it does not intervene gracefully or subtly. Great number of assorted colors of claws, jaws and horns settle the score.
Ecological message, "do not bomb the mother nature, she bites"
Political message "our foreign policy won't change soon"
Mineralogical message "unobtainium does grow on trees"
Military message "use ballistic missiles, drop something from orbit, do not catch arrows"
Possible Na'vi extinction cause "headache, tailache and combinations"
Conclusion "If your new bride is blue, just borrow some unobtainium".
