Thunderbirds Are Go: Designated Driver (2015)
A reminder that this is a kid's show
As I watched this episode with its broad and sometimes juvenile humor, I was reminded that this IS a children's show. Most of the episodes have plot elements that will appeal to older viewers but I'm thinking this one was targeted for the kiddies, with enough callbacks to the original series to make it interesting for people like me who grew up with the original. Given that, I'd give it a 9/10 for my nieces' and nephews' kids and maybe a 7 for the rest of us.
I really enjoyed Sylvia Anderson as Great Aunt Sylvia and didn't realize until I did a little research that this was her last performance (in 2015) and she died the next year.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Visitor (1995)
The "Alternate Future" plot taken to a new level.
This is by far my favorite Star Trek episode. I can echo just about every positive thing about this episode, but what put it over the top for me is the fact that Benjamin remembers everything that happened in that alternate timeline. All through the series you can see the love he has for his son, but now he has seen what his son could become and the sacrifices he is willing to make. It's one thing to believe in your child and trust that he loves you. It's quite another thing to know that he is willing to die for you, actually see him do it, and then get him back again.
Justice League: The New Frontier (2008)
A fanboy's dream
I can't add much to the positive comments I've seen. My biggest criticism is that they tried to cram too much into too short a film and the result is a production that is absolutely awesome for fanboys like me but probably somewhat confusing for people who didn't grow up with DC comics from the 50's onward. I loved the focus on Hal Jordan (who by the way never was black) and it was almost bittersweet to see him and Carol as well as the original Silver Age Flash considering how they wound up. One comment on the "S" on Superman's costume. I liked the fact that they used a costume that was similar to the Fleischer cartoons, but it was a little anachronistic. By 1953 (and certainly by 1960), the "S" looked a lot more like it does today. Not to take anything away from the creative decision to use it. It definitely reinforced that this was a period piece. Some people objected to the blatant pro-American attitude. Read a comic from the 50's. Good or bad, that's the way it was - the Justice League of *America*. I think they struck a good balance between modern sensibilities while still giving us a feeling for what people expected from their heroes in the 1950's.
