How I Met Your Mother (2005)
Not bad, very funny and entertaining
A mate of mine recommended this and I was pleasantly surprised. It has a strong pilot and it makes an impression. This shows that you do not need 1 hour to try and make people laugh. The 20+ minutes suffice and the jokes never get old. I think it is because of the cast and their interpretation of the script. Neil, Allison, Josh, Cobie and Jason keep the audience on their toes with their acting. The jokes in this show are funny and not vulgar. It is rare to see something nowadays that does not resort to vulgarity in an attempt to humour. Some of the jokes I even use in every day life and to be frank, I saw most of the episodes 4-5 times... each. I highly recommend it and I hope it gets another season.
The Big Bang Theory (2007)
Too much hype from everone
Many of my friends recommended this show because it is very funny. The high IMDb rating and positive comments made me go out there and see all of them. Yes, I saw 2 complete seasons and all the ongoing S3 episodes. The pilot did not have the same effect on me like How I Met Your Mother. I barely laughed and found the jokes weird. Could it be because this show is cliché after cliché? Most probably. Geeks with no life try to meet women. It is not like we haven't seen this before. Most of the time this is poorly implemented and not funny. In all my marathon I can count on one hand the episodes where I laughed a bit. I won't criticise acting because all of them have talent. Sheldon's portrayal takes skill and is perfect. Obsessive, compulsive, neurotic, you name it. Back to the show per se. When you see so many episodes in a row you kind of notice repetitions. Most of the episodes begin with them eating Thai food and how Sheldon's bowel movements need to be done at a very specific time. Leonard tries to be cool but utterly fails every he talks to Penny. She is the cute face in the show trying to complement the guys with her stupidity. The chemistry is not bad between her and Sheldon but ...not very funny most of the time. This show is supposed to be a comedy and in my view it needs to take notes from the producers of how I met your mother.
Bottom line, A lot of noise for nothing.
Step Brothers (2008)
Grow up people...
I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!
I wasn't expecting much from this. I did not like Talladega so I knew I will not like this. I saw it because of the good comments it received here. The film depicts two grown up men playing teenagers. Both have a huge parental complex and cannot live if the umbilical is broken. They become step brothers and their behaviour is very predictable. They hate each other in the beginning and they start doing the same old: pranks on one another. Unfortunately, the jokes and ideas these two grown up men have used to be funny when I was twelve. Putting your balls on a drum set, 'gina jokes and all that tasteless humour is beyond me now. This film took everything to the extreme. You had a bad joke but that was not enough. It had to be pushed, and pushed, and pushed until it became so lame that the premise wasn't even funny anymore.
The plot thickens when Dale shacks up with Derek's wife. Derek is Will's brother in the movie. Typical brother, very successful but the biggest moron on the planet. So, back to the shacking. That was so random and it lowered the quality. Her lines were taking from a porn film and they were very explicit. The scene where she pees in a cubicle is simply overkill.
What was funny in this film, I do not know? Every scene involves explicit sexual organ description or sex related images.
Mad Money (2008)
Funny, well crafted jokes and amazing acting from everyone
I just came from the cinema and my jaws hurt from all that laughing. Amazing performance from everyone. The writing was good and even though it had the Fun with Dick and Jane approach in the beginning the film is more than enjoyable. Jokes are well crafted and you laugh constantly. It is a shame that people rated this so low. I was reluctant to see it because I checked the film here first. I am happy I ignored the low rating because it was worth the cinema ticket. Not the first time when the IMDb rating does not do justice to a film. If you are in a mood for a comedy on a Saturday night and fancy a good laugh, go see this one and you will not be disappointed.
