Spaceman (2024)
Believe the people who didn't like this movie, it was terrible
Imagine someone who had seen many movies about an astronaut alone in space. Now imagine someone who has a middle school understanding of philosophy and adult relationships. That is the person who wrote this movie, and whoever it was who decided that it would be a good idea to make it. This is a dreary, repetitive movie, dominated by a CGI spider in space. I do give them credit for naming their instantaneous communication method CzechConnect. We'll just forget that it is impossible and not the way that quantum entanglement can actually work. Skip this film and occupy your time with something more intelligent and original.
Maine Cabin Masters (2017)
Fast forward through Ashley and reveals
I have no problem with Ashley and how she relates to the others on the show. My primary complaint is her poor design choices. How many cabins can be shades of blue? How much crap can she fabricate that anyone would want to live with? She loves to refer to her "team." If they had 10% of the men and women construction experts on the show, they might offer some value. The reveals, like many such shows, are a long series of "Oh my God"s and "I can't believe it!"s and "Is this OURS?!?!?"s. Skip them - they are predictable and make the owners look silly. The construction techniques are interesting but I couldn't sit through some of the shows, such as the one featuring LARPers.
Moonfall (2022)
The evident failure of STEM education for movie makers
Did anyone involved in this movie take even basic science classes? It's fine to take one idea and stretch the limits of believability. For example, let's suppose the moon was a "megastucture." To support this, you must then have some good science and plausible ideas. It also helps to have decent writing and acting. Questions the moviemakers should have asked themselves:
- Would cell phones really work after all buildings have been destroyed?
- Would oxygen that got sucked into space magically return of its own accord?
- Do I know what a gravity wave is and how strong it is?
- Could the gravity of the moon lift a tree off a person but not suck the surrounding people into space?
It would not have been hard to use this material and budget to construct a far superior movie. Did the participants know it was a joke while they were creating it?
The Gilded Age: Never the New (2022)
Sumptuously dull and badly written
I first thought that the acting was poor but, in fact, the writing is dull and clichéd. White privilege on display. I don't care what happens to the characters and, anyway, it's easy to guess the plot. This is no Downton Abbey.
Another Life: Live to Fight Another Day (2021)
Another season of terrible sci-fi
The saga continues with horrible writing, poor acting, ridiculous science, and a dumb concept. Several of the model/starship crew continue to have perfect hair and makeup, though.
Atropa (2018)
Good production marred by spotty acting
The creators should have gotten better actors and script editors to match the very good production, filming, and CGI. In particular, the lead actor is often wooden and speaks his lines with little emotion.
In the Footsteps of Killers (2021)
Two terrible "acting" jobs
Why was this made? Is Fox embarrassed? Did she have a large tax bill?
Why should we possibly care about two amateurs investigating old crimes?
A Glitch in the Matrix (2021)
Juvenile, fake "experts"
The topic of this film deserves serious consideration. Are we living in a simulation? It's a fascinating and intellectual question. You will find no intelligent answers in this film.
Nothing Trivial (2011)
Changes direction significantly
This starts as a good-natured story of the relationships among friends but by the third season becomes menacing. The substory of Celeste is absurd. People reverse behavior constantly, though I wish Brian would just grow up.
The Mallorca Files: The Outlaw Jose Rey (2021)
Tired of Ines
Ines is a repetitive, one-dimensional character who adds nothing but annoying nagging throughout.
Upload: Welcome to Upload (2020)
Cliched plot, annoyingly bad science
The plot of Upload steals liberally from several other, much better sci-fi stories. The plot twists are predictable. While this is fiction, the obvious basic science errors early on significantly detracted from my ability to suspend disbelief. The religious aspect is silly and unnecessary.
Ad Astra (2019)
Science? Gravity?
Rather than being arty and science-based, this mess of a movie confusedly moves from one scene to another. This must have been fairly low budget because they certainly skimped on the technical advisors. Gravity comes and goes when convenient. Also, Brad is an amazingly precise EVA navigator over long distances at high speeds.
Another Life: Through the Valley of Shadows (2019)
So bad it's not good
Bad science. Bad casting. Bad acting. Bad writing. Bad premise.
Seriously, the idea of having such a pouty, inexperienced, yet good looking crew with no discipline is ridiculous. The scientific mistakes are so frequent that this series seems to have been written by science deniers.
Watch if you have 10 hours to waste.
Queens of Mystery (2019)
Fun but don't they know about fingerprints?
Entertaining, quirky, and worth a watch. It's odd they don't seem to know about any modern police methods.
