I really enjoyed the film, I felt that each character was well portrayed and (for want of a better word) fairly portrayed. I often find that in this kind of film it is all to easy to lay blame at a single character, in this case the Major. Instead the case is shown evenly and without bias, the audience can see "whodunit" but are also left to conclude for them selves who the real culprit was, this prompted a very long discussion in our house!

The major is shown a good man with a dreadful wife, who after 20 (I think) years of marriage he'd had enough of being bullied, controlled and embarrassed in front of his peers and clients. Who, whether he did kill his wife or not, was arguably justified in his act. However he was also well shown to lose the plot a little between the first and second parts of the film. His decision to kill Martin was far more calculated and inexcusable.

Martin ( by David Thewlis) was well acted - shown as a nervous and insecure young man who only gains any confidence after his marriage, and is most secure at work. This makes him a direct threat to Armstrong's business, and in line as the next victim.

I really enjoyed the film - and would whole heartedly recommend the film to everyone - be aware though it's very moreish, and the 2 halves together make 3 1/2 hours of telle - we all got cramp from sitting down for the whole lot - but perhaps your more patient than us!

really excellent!
7 January 2011
A really excellent film, I genuinely believed in King George and the Queens marriage. I was also highly impressed with Colin Firth's stress fuelled stammer which was very convince and never once over the top. During the final scene I even had to grip my friends arm due to suspense!

It was well acted, well written, funny, sad and a joy to watch. The only stopping it coming up to a full 10/10 was I felt it was a little long - but I think that may have been my bladder (I'd drunk quite a lot of water!) in retrospect it didn't feel long at all!!

Go and see thins film if you want a gentle, lovely and fabulously fun film then god for it!!

Downton Abbey (2010–2015)
10/10
lovely!
6 January 2011
OK so I'll admit, Downton isn't a academic study of social change, nor is it entirely original ( let's be honest) - but it doesn't pretend to be!

Does that make it any less of a excellent drama? No! Does That decrease the clever, witty and delicious writing? No! Does it cloud the ( at many moments) wonderful acting? No!

Admittedly it isn't hard core drama - but it was lovely, it made me feel warm, it let me get all cross and annoyed (in a nice way), it got me exited - and soothed.

Honestly what more can you ask for??

Maggie Smith is excellent as the snooty Dowageress, Brendan Cole does Mr Bates very well - and Joanne Froggat (who I only manage to catch on tele occasionally sadly) who was equally lovely.

It was all just lovely!

Casanova (2005)

Don't look over there someone's inventing the sandwich
17 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I think the negative reviews are all from people after a genuine biography - not a humorous, clever, dramatisation of a mans life - which this was - clever, sad and brilliantly written. Casanova was witty, gentle, sexy as sin and ugh made me go weak at the knees! This was what it was, and I for one really enjoyed it - I found Henriette and Casanova's impossible love heart wrenching, and the dreary English court very funny. Seeing the fabulous colours and music from the other court made me want to go there.(however inaccurate it may be!) Rocco as the enduring friend and Jack as the silent son who eventually does just what Casanova does, but so very differently, without the care and love and time that made Casanova "the greatest lover that ever lived"

Warning: Spoilers
i absolutely loved this!!!! not a single fault, i was brought up in a north wales village almost identical to this it was wonderful.

as for the person who called it racism.....well i just hope you've stopped taking whatever you were on when you saw it.i found it in no way offencive,i didn't find any of the characters stereotyped i found that there was a wide mix of people a great many who were articulate and intelligent,in fact i found it to be a funny but accurate portrayal of many small welsh villages.

so get down of your high horse and get a life.

and watch this lovely comedy drama again, twp!

a real joy too watch

Warning: Spoilers
a fantastic program touching, never funny but did make me smile at moments. weather it was true or not Dr Niven's secretary dieing and loosing her husband in one fail swoop was almost tear jerking - but i would have felt cheated if i had cried.

at times it seemed to struggle to find the drama/science balance.the way dunks was watching Peggy eluded to some kind of war time relationship making it more dramatic than scientific but Peggy's dramatic death and poor abandoned flat footed dunks was definitely a scientific ending.

the journey the characters took and the helplessness of the medical staff is hard to watch but satisfying to witness

the lack of knowledge of the medics was incredible but understandable.

a joy to watch never unsettling , easy to watch , and very informative

the best for study days!!!
2 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
i love doctors, admittedly not due to the (un)realistic story lines but due to the fact it is in good fun. and highlight lots of important social and health issues.like Vivian's rape and Ruth's breakdown.

and like cake it is very morish!!!!!!!!!!! i like the relationships as well, like that of Heston and lily.also that of cherry and the very fit Simon although unfortunately it would appear it will emerge that he is gay :(meaning that him and cherry cant be the sweet couple i want them to be!!! oh well i suppose i can still admire him and his floral shirts from afar! the perfect remedy for excessive study leave!!!!! so have a seat chill out and soak up the loveliness that is doctors

Marple: Marple: What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw (2004)

Damson Gin and Christmas
23 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I whole heartedly disagree with any comments who say that Geraldine McEwan is wrong for Miss Marple she is sharp and witty and a romantic I love this completely, the cast all work well together especially Rose Kegan and Charlie creed-mills as a husband and wife who are married just for money. The whole film is full of surprises, when Alfred dies I was caught completely off guard thinking it would be Luther who die.The Christmas theme is fantastic adding a lighter covering to the quite Gothic murder. I mean if you can't trust your Doctor who can you . I also love Amanda Holden and John Hannah together at the end.And all the wonderful little added extras like Rob Brydon as the rail attendant, and Celia Immerie as the formidable ballet director. Excellent

Marple: The Murder at the Vicarage (2004)
Season 1, Episode 2

excellent
5 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I will admit that this is a world away from the book, but i love it. Yes Joan Hickson was a true to the book Miss Marple who spoke properly and sat up and had no relation-ships and was stern however this Miss Marple is lighter, people open up to her.She has a very warm old feel about her combined with a very modern un shock-ability . Admitidly the WW1 sub plot was unnecessary but it gave her more depth and showed how she knew all she did, it also explained why she has not married -her heart was broken-.The cast are wonderful the Protheroes are wonderfully cast and Derek Jacobi and Janet McTeer played together very well. The banter between Stephan Tompkinson and Geraldine Mcgewan was not misplaced,it very much showed how she wasn't an "old maid" but lively. And his downright rudeness to her and the vicar makes excellent viewing. However my favourite pairing was the lovely Rachael Stirling and the very good looking Tim McInnery, not only did they look believable together she was evidently head over heels for him and he for her, while his insecurities over her and Lawrence Redding was sweet and believable, he thinks thats she is ready to rush off at any moment. I see no problem with substituted characters i found the fact that the Dufosse's existed an interesting twist and helped to make it all the harder to decipher whodunit !!!!!!!!!!!1
