Day of the Sirens (2002)
Tense Altmanesque thriller
Obviously a homage to the narrative style of Altman i.e. Shotcuts, Day of the Sirens is an intelligent well written pot-boiler with some surprising flourishes and powerful action sequences. At times disjointed but on the whole very engaging and entertaining, kept fresh by sometimes startling plot twists and a couple of large set pieces that are very memorable. The DVD I rented had disappointingly few DVD extras as such, for those curious to know more production information, you won't find it unfortunately on this release. I really liked the artwork though, would be curious to see original film poster. Curiously little press around this UK release, for some reason a well kept secret, four out of five!
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2000)
Thought this would be dreadful, what a surprise!
I read such contradictory comments on this film that I decided to check it out myself. I thought that it would be dreadful, what a surprise! Once you get your head round the kitchy Art Work that makes it look like some kind of seventies Italian exploitation film and the slow start, if you make it that far you're in for a treat. It is a very strange film indeed, the music is the first thing I noticed, the sound track seems to have been selected with a wry sense of humour, very tongue in cheek, very unusual, towards the end it had me completely hooked, don't know if the sound track is available on CD. The story is your classic boy meets girl and proceeds to go wrong and murder and mayhem ensue. Lots of very unexpected twists and very strange characters. Particularily liked the mini horror film scene, creepy and memorable. On the whole a highly enjoyable film. I can understand why it's had it's detractors though. It's quite insane and if you like your films logical and glossy this would be a dissapointment. I like the eclectic and the bizarre so Kiss Kiss Bang Bang get my highest vote. Ten out of Ten. More please!
