This is the first version of Jane Eyre I ever saw, I must have been about 8 years old and fell in love with it immediately. As an adult I have been trying to get hold of it on DVD with no luck, just by chance the other morning it came on to an old movies sky channel and I was able to see it again.
It was more beautiful than I remembered it, the images created using only black and white film are amazing, beautiful if not a little depressing in places it captures the mood of the book perfectly. I love Joan Fontain but her hair annoyed me throughout, a sort of mixture of the fashion of the day (1944) and the era (1830's).
Orson Welles I think was the perfect Mr Rochester, moody, changeable, abrupt yet kind and strong. He was also striking to look at but not handsome, just like the Mr Rochester of the book.
The film does leave out some the story, there is no St John for example or her new found family, but it is a film not a mini series and does well to capture the main arks of the story.
Brilliant!
