College (2008)
Extremely Funny!
College was amazingly good. A very smart comedy that was extremely funny. It has the charm of the good old stupid comedies, so it will appeal to those who enjoy those types, but it proves to be very witty and well written as well. I was given tickets to the screening and thought -why not, it's free- but I am glad I went. It was really entertaining, and I am quite the movie snob. I predict this movie will not get the credit it is due based on the trailer, but it is the classic case of bad trailer, great movie! The three boys who play the main college bound characters are brilliant with their comedic timing. I think this movie was very well cast as well as well written. I enjoyed it, just thought I'd pass the word.
The Life Before Her Eyes (2007)
Great ending...
I was very pleased with this film throughout, even before watching the surprising, extremely good ending. Unfortunately, that's all I want to say, for fear of spoiling it for everyone. But, take my word for it, "WOW". This film was really quite a treat. It has been a while since I have enjoyed a story so much. The entire film was very intense, and wonderfully put together doing a great job balancing the past and present without causing confusion. Being male, I have to also mention that this is not just a movie for women. I had heard word that it was being categorized as a "women's movie" and I have to disagree. Men and women alike can enjoy this one.
Boarding Gate (2007)
Asia Argento, brilliant
The credit for my enjoyment of this film could possibly be entirely due to the brilliant performance of the leading actress Asia Argento. She gave an honest, artistic and daring performance throughout and should be tremendously applauded. The supporting cast was also well chosen making "Boarding Gate" a well rounded very entertaining film.
I found "Boarding Gate" to be a refreshing break from the mundane collection of modern films out there. This story of crazy love and relationships takes you to beautiful places and leaves you thinking. I recommend this film to any movie lover who is looking for a new favorite!
Surfwise (2007)
Beautiful, and unique
This story is so unique everyone must see it. I think it will appeal to surfers right away, but I think it is important to point out that this is not just a surfer movie, not at all. This is a documentary that details the upbringing of a very unique family. Once a doctor, the father decides he is ready for a major very unconventional change, and leaves his career to travel and disconnect. On the road this couple has and raises 9 children, with no schooling, no work and very unique beliefs and values. Although very a typical and easy to criticize, there is a lot to be said for this families view points and lifestyle. I took a lot away from this film, and believe that it holds a very important message, that with an open mind everyone can learn from.
The Signal (2007)
Still creeped out, in a good way!
What a cool movie! I am still creeped out a little :) I especially liked the different angles the story was told from. Two thumbs up!
The Signal is deliciously mad and twisted film making. It's a great blur of horror and comedy, making it appealing to a broad audience.
I read: "A slasher fest that references such predecessors as George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead and Pulse, a 2001 chiller by Japan's talented Kiyoshi Kurosawa, while still remaining original." New York Post
Also: "An outright horror film that nonetheless veers on occasion into surreal black comedy, The Signal takes Marshall McLuhan's famous statement 'the medium is the message' to extremes not explored since David Cronenberg's Videodrome in 1983."
Flawless (2007)
Perfect heist
I loved this story. My main admiration for this film stems from the fact that it wasn't filled with a bunch of gimmicky gadgets to try and make it wow-ing. This story was set in the 60's, and they were true to the accuracy of the time. No need for all the fake bells and whistles, the story and cast was all this film needed.
Well done! Very refreshing change in the heist film genre.
Impressive performances by both Demi Moore and Micheal Caine. If you are thinking twice about watching this film because you haven't heard much about it, it's worth every minute! Being a long time Micheal Caine fan, this film holds up to all his previous work.
