Avatar (2009)
A perfect 10. An experience like no other
Honestly, this movie goes right into the top 5 best movies I've ever seen, and after the serious thinking I still have to do, it might as well top them all.
A short while into the movie I forgot all about the 3D element. The scenes are so beautiful in a way never before portrayed in cinema. Cameron simply created sheer beauty in this film, and if you're the kind that likes "feeling" the movie and tap into the theme, then this movie will be something you'll remember for the rest of your life.
Perfect execution aside, the story of this feature is actually great. I don't know why people bash the plot line, it will capture you from the beginning and lead through the greatest adventure you've had in cinema. A lot of memorable moments will stick with you and by the time the movie ends, you'd wish you could live in Pandora instead of going back to the planet that's behind the cinema exit.
Some people claim the story isn't original and yet, I personally have no idea what they're talking about. This specific mix of different elements was so brilliant and capturing, and I bought it wholeheartedly. To me, this movie was absolutely perfect. I AM aware that not everybody likes sinking into the movie like I do, but even if you won't find the story as satisfying as I did you'll love this movie anyways.
Bottom line: watch this movie NOW. Don't wait for a home video release because no matter what kind of gear of have at home, you won't be able to relive this experience the same way.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)
The Best Film in History.
I have to say, I didn't have high hopes when me and my friends entered the Cinema to watch this movie.
But I was wrong.
From the very first minute I was blown away with the intricate dialogue and sophisticated characters. If you want to make a film, be sure to watch this one first, to see how it's done: top notch character development, meaningful writing and a brilliant story to keep it all together. Some characters developed to a level that had the entire audience moved in sympathy. This movie shows that on both sides of the war, there are actually people, and even an Evil Boss is really just a person, with loves and hates and a dream. This movie, hands down, changed lives in the cinema. This is the kind of movie that Tarantino will like to refer to in one of his films.
The action scenes in this movie were incredible as well, with a lot of detail going to the CGI, to the level of perfection. Movies that offer such advanced visuals are very hard to come by, especially when it's done so delicately and when it blends so naturally with the rest of the film.
Another strong point of this feature is the interesting pacing, which gives you the right amount of time to adore and completely come to terms with every scene, while holding you interested and never bored or confused. I think that my favorite bit of this movie is how everything seems logical and real, and makes sense, and that's a stunning accomplishment, given the movie is based on action figures.
Bottom line: There are so many movies today that are empty, bad, and a complete waste of time. How lucky we are to have movies like G.I. Joe to remind us how much we love good cinema. If you didn't watch this eternal achievement, please find the time to do so, and you'll appreciate a good movie like never before.
Pledge This! (2006)
Somebody please make it stop
This is a real story. This morning I finished my night ship at work, got into the car and drove home. On my way I got a message from one of my coworkers, who seemed really stressed and wanted me to get back to him as soon as possible.
A few minutes later I got home, and called him back after parking. He said that there's a woman there who claims I trashed one of her car doors while leaving the parking lot. That was strange to me, since I didn't hit anything and my car was perfectly clean and whole.
Later today I realized that the woman was trying to get other people to pay her for a new door, by parking next to them and then blaming them for hitting her car, while it was actually hit from before. I called my agency and it took them a while to calm me down. Eventually I did, but my day was ruined.
And then, this evening, I saw Pledge This!, and realized my day wasn't entirely lost until that point, which made it the worst day in my life.
(A stupid girl): "Whoa, that dress must have cost hundreds of dollars!" (Another stupid girl): "You mean thousands." (A stupid girl): "Thousands of dollars?" (Another stupid girl): "Hundreds of thousands." (A stupid girl): "Thousands of thousands. That's what I meant!"
This dialog is a perfect example of how shallow, abominable, idiotic, execrable, and completely abysmal this movie is. The plot is based on a first grader's limerick, the acting is based on porno, and you know what - Paris Hilton is really not that hot. Most of the other girls looked way better than that silicone plastic Barbie, although they all portrayed a similar lack of intelligence and acting abilities.
I saw "Cursed" once and believed it was the worst movie ever, but this movie is not even on the scale. It is a waste of money in the most horrible and angering form you can imagine. And I don't mean YOUR money, I mean the producers' money, who are probably going to slam their heads against random walls to the beat of "What the heck was I thinking" for the rest of their lives.
If your local video store has this movie in stock, discontinue your membership at once.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Quality production, waste of resources.
Well, in my opinion the director is genius. The movie has NO PLOT WHATSOEVER, and yet the director finds a great way of telling it. The movie is divided to chapters, as every chapter is getting you further down the "plot". The thing is that there is no plot, other than "My man tried to kill me at the wedding, so now I'll just go and kick his ba**s".
The ba**s kicking is not bad, although it isn't exactly good. It shows that a lot of effort was put into the making of this film, but I fear it was a waste, since it really tells you nothing at all, and tries to tell you things anyway. The deadly bride doesn't even have a name.
In the film, the bride is going through all of the *evil* characters and kill them systematically. There's a lot of blood, more blood, some blood to go with it and a few blades and fights. The only innovative fight is the first one. After that, you are may be excused.
There's also a scene that features some really bad anime. The creators probably wanted to give it their own touch, but they ended up with a REALLY BAD ANIME scene, during which I only wished it was over.
The soundtrack is really nice, though, well- made and picked. Overall this movie is really well- produced, but it has nothing to offer. Today top-notch effects are not enough, I fear. Watch it if you're into tons of blood and gore, that doesn't let plot get in the way.
5/10
Ekkusu (1996)
Praying for the movie to end.
X (Live Action) ---------------
The idea behind 'X' is rather good. It is about the clashes of powers of Earth and heavens. Each of these are represented by Dragons of some sort, each dragon has a unique skill. The Dragons fight in Tokyo, as the earth dragons want to destroy humanity and let nature take over Earth as it once were. That pretty much sums it up. The animation of "X" is okay as well - the backgrounds are well done, and the characters are ... artistic. But unfortunately, these two elements combine into a horrible film. The characters lack character, the plot lacks story. Actually what kept me going was the question: "what am I watching this for, anyway?!".
When you actually get to the end (yes, there is one!), you get very disappointed - the last and most important fight (that will determine the fate of Earth) lasts about 20 seconds. The dubbing (sorry, we had some subtitles issues) is awful. Everybody's yelling like they're half - conscious, there's no feel or a touch to it. Actually, the best thing about this title is that it ends and that I DON'T OWN IT. As this is based on a series, even the most fanatic fans should boycott this terrible motion picture... Total waste of time.
Street Fighter Zero (1999)
Nice, VERY nice!
Street Fighter Zero is certainly better than any other SF movie.
The 1994 movie is a real joke; SF2 the animated movie is nice, indeed, but this movie is actually GOOD. First of all, unlike all others, it has a plot. A very nice one, too. There's a little mind game of "who to trust", and the end is really great.
Second: The battles are somewhat more energetic, more dramatic - a little slower, and emphasized. Impressing. Well, anything else I'll tell you will just spoil the movie. Go see it! It is great, even for those who aren't Street Fighter fans.
Overall - it isn't for nothing that around 19% of votes (and most) voted 10!!!
Jui kuen II (1994)
This time Jackie can show us what he can really do...
Well, I just saw this movie, and I got to say: WHOA. Jackie fights like never before, and leaves you with your mouths wide open. This movie is incredible: the fights are simply the best, the plot is really good and justifies the fights :) . We also get to see Jackie acts a few dramatic scenes. Overall this movie is excellent. After watching the end and the other fights we are left to think: How the hell can Neo claim to be a fighter?!
Sutorîto faitâ II gekijô-ban (1994)
How did they never think about this before?!
Well, I must say I LIKED THIS FILM!!! The drawings were great (manga, what else?), and combined with the magic touch of manga artists for dramatic scenes and action, this is a PIECE OF FINE ART. A lot is being revealed and we are finally aware to a little of the characters' background (if you want more try Street Fighter Zero or Alpha, which is the same movie...). This movie should be replaced with that dumb variations that had been made before (with all doe respect to Mr. Van Dam, Ryu still kicks his ass).
I would very recommend watching Street Fighter Zero after this.
