This Is England (2006)
This is Embarrassment
Fabulous Flick, hence the 9/10 score I gave it.
One would suspect that the writer and film makers are trying to further discredit a Thatcher reign that needs no further discouragement. The Iron Ldy herself did enough to embarrass the British people for many a millennia into the future.
I am not going to say much about the film as I don't want to spoil it for you, but please watch it - It is a masterpiece of the future.
The lingering feeling is of horrible regret at the invasion of islands that are much closer to Argentina than Great Britain. It is like Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland for regret and mistakes, by the British Hierarchy.
Lest you think this is a political film set on the Malvinas islands, please allow me to correct you. This is a superb social commentary on the insular world of 1980s Skinheads within the UK proper.
I say no more. No spoilers here.
Nabbeun namja (2001)
A disturbing movie, not unlike the original Straw Dogs kernel.
I love foreign language movies, no matter where in the world they come from. I am especially drawn to Japanese Horror, Korean Drama and the South American Gangster genre. This movie is a South Korean Drama and it would have its critics in the Western World.
Bad Guy is really about a guy who is not all bad and a girl who is kidnapped because she can't pay a money lender and is put on the game to suffer her retribution. The movie starts as a fairy story of a posh girl and her geek boyfriend meeting up. It quickly undergoes a dark twist before the girl is basically thrust upon the red light district and is basically raped into submission by passing punters.
Probably the most unlikely part of the movie is when the girl actually falls for the leader of the hoods that put her on the street in the first place, a la Straw Dogs (a bit). She even stays on the game for him at the end of the movie, one would guess, to enable them to eat and travel...
I feel this is an absorbing movie and is definitely worth a watch for those who have just under two hours to use. One could do worse than Bad Guy. I am left a little aghast at the twists and turns in the flick but overall, it is a good film with a sound plot - Which is not always the case with Korean Movies...
MacGruber (2010)
No Spoiler Here - Just an honest review
This is one of the silliest movies I have ever watched. It is dead pan humor and while it gets better as it progresses I am still left wondering if the producers had a few dollars leftover after a bigger production and decided to waste it on this.
While it would most certainly come under the "Comedy" genre, it is by no means a very funny or side splitting type of film.
The acting is perfect and the plot is sound but the the movie just isn't any good, as a comedy like. I can see what the writers were trying to do with this and I believe they achieved their goal but they simply can't be very proud of the finished article. What looks good on paper may not always transfer well to the silver screen. I give it 3 out of 10.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
The Day the Earth Is Better off without this film
My Holy God why did you allow the powers that be to spend multi millions on this film? Keanu Reeves is perfect for the role that requires no emotion but people I have to say that this is a film where one spends the entire time waiting for something to happen but it never does.
It is like a mixture between Star Trek Nemesis and 2001 A space Odyssey. the boredom is palpable throughout and only a great performance from Ms. Connelly saves the whole thing.
I recommend this film to everyone. Why? Because I think your morbid curiosity should be satiated like mine... And ultimately be disappointed...

The Mission (1986)
Not about Fim Making
A wonderfully told true story about politics versus reality. This film would have one on the fence, understanding both sides of the divide. One would find oneself sympathizing with the church in Europe at the time as well as with the native inhabitants of the film, whose local naivety maybe allowed them to not understand the mechanics of power on an International scale; and rightly so.
Joffe's direction coupled with Morricone's greatest ever score make this file an absolute must for anybody who considers themselves a film buff. You ain't no buff until you've reviewed this.
Wonderful performances throughout, wonderful direction and a masterful score make this one of THE movies of the Twentieth century.
The New Adventures of Tarzan (1935)
Attenborough would be proud
I am here watching this movie for the first time with my good friend Roly. The date is 14 July 2008. I have to say that for 1935, when the likes of Joe Louis were boxing their way to stardom, the photography is excellent. Unfortunately the photography is mostly taken up with vistas of the great African Planes (In Puerto Rico). I was particularly made nervous by the scene in which Bruce Bennett appeared to kiss Cheetah on the lips. Of course I can forgive this because I am looking at it in a 2008 frame of mind and I am naturally homophobic.
Look, its like this, the movie is mostly just camera shots of wild "Africa" with no acting whatsoever. The director should be dug up and shot. It's a disaster. Gordon Scott will be turning in his grave, not to mention Johnnny Weismuller and Cheetah! If you don't allow this onto IMDb, then you are stifling free speech and you believe in a Brigadoon-like civilisation where nobody says anything bad. 1935 it is. Good cinematography it has. Storyline it definitely hasn't.
YES you should buy it. Just so you can go through what I went through.
Bbye Bye.
