Jane Eyre (2006)
10/10
I was hesitant at first...
6 November 2006
...but now I am truly hooked. As I waited patiently for each hour of more Jane, I grew to admire the way the book was handled. Yes, much of Jane's past is missing, but what is there is captivating. Georgie Henley is scarily mature - more than she has a right to be - and her understanding of young Jane's gravity and passion was wonderfully portrayed.

When Ruth Wilson took the scene, I didn't see at first how she was the unearthly Jane I had read. But it became clearer and clearer, and by far she is the most human and understandable Jane yet. Her face speaks volumes as she says nothing. "That face," comments Toby Stephens' Rochester. It is true. Though we see her silent face many times, we have no problem guessing exactly what she is feeling.

At first, I thought Toby was disappointing. I quite liked the sarcasm of William Hurt in the 1996 version, and Mr. Stephens seemed more brash than sarcastic, more flirting than teasing. But it was the chemistry that quite obviously grew between these two characters that has solidified Toby Stephens as Edward Fairfax Rochester for me. For the first time in a movie version, I realized how much the two had become friends first, and then soul mates.

Two other things were handled extraordinarily. The sex and the scary. From dark corridors and floating candles, burning beds, portraits of mad people and blood dripping, Susanna White got her Gothic right. It is almost a ghost story. This suspense keeps the story from being overly lovey-dovey, and shows a real contrast between the white taffeta-covered aristocracy, and the darkly-clad Jane in Rochester's dim study.

As for the X factor, this is not Jane Austen. Women can have conversations with men alone in rooms. Dark-haired, exotic beauties can seduce with a look, cheat with a smile and sin the world round. All of it is not afraid to show up in this version. Rochester and Jane's connection, displayed quite innocently and platonic in some versions, blazes with passion in this. The flashbacks in the final hour of series are some of the steamiest and most emotionally charged parts of this production.

It's heart-warming, passionate, suspenseful, full of beautiful scenery and costuming; all in all, a whole 4 hours of excellent entertainment. Don't miss out.

Ultimate Betrayal (1994 TV Movie)
10/10
I was in the movie!
15 February 2005
My sister was an extra in it. We're exactly the same, so really, if she was in it then I was in it. She was in the church choir scene. If you watch closely, she rolls her eyes when they do a close-up. She's pretty cool. At least I think so. She's going to be a big star eventually. Yup, we're going to move to Australia together and join the acting world down under. So you should watch this moving solely for the reason of seeing my sister/self. Have a great day. Now, because they require 10 lines of text I'm going to tell a story. So this one day, I was walking down the street. Yup, that's the story. Oh, I guess I could tell you what I found at the end of the street... an intersection! It was called Younge street. So walked up that street. Days and nights passed until I reached a sign that said "Welcome to the town of Younge, where the street ends". Yup, that was it, I'd gotten to the end of the street. So, this other day, I was walking down the street, and that day turned into another and another, and finally I made it home. By the time I had returned to Toronto aliens had taken over and they were ruling all humans. The only animals able to defeat the aliens were guinea pigs, so I rushed into the nearest pet store and bought 5 new guinea pigs. I kept them in my back pack to ward off the dangerous creatures. Eventually the aliens got tired of ruling humans and thought it would be more fun to put a politician in charge, so that's what they did. His name was Mike Harris. Let me tell you, the guinea pigs didn't work anymore...

And that's why you should watch Ultimate Betrayal.

Original Sin (2001)
7/10
Didn't think it was that terrible...
1 March 2004
I must confess before you read this that I am truly a period costume freak, and this time period is one of my favourites.

That out of the way, I still enjoyed this movie. In fact, I had avoided seeing it after it had screened, then after it was released on video... until my best friend and I decided to give it a whirl.

I was NOT disappointed. I was even expecting to be disappointment, and was instead actually pleasantly surprised. Angelina and Antonio are both admirable actors and are not hard to look at either. Sure, it's got sex, love, period costumes and scandal... but so do a lot of other movies that aren't even half as well-made as this one. If you don't expect great things from this movie, if all you want is a decent story with some beautiful eye-candy, then this movie is great. You may even be enthralled like I was with the way the plot twists and turns, or how the power over someone is all in the mind... or the heart.

Overall, give Original Sin some credit and the benefit of the doubt. It might surprise you.

Roar (1997)
Incredible Drama... for a Summer run show
3 December 2002
This show, though extremely short in existence, may very well be one of my favourite TV series ever. Although the series didn't end (the last episodes were made, but never released in North America), it had an allure and a flow that made it irresistible. With such wonderful reception to other historical drama genre pieces like Braveheart and Gladiator, it surprises me to no end that this didn't last past the summer. Heath Ledger, before his North American break, plays a young Irish prince who must unite all the tribes of the island in order to force the invasive Romans out of their world.

Space: Above and Beyond (1995–1996)
A personal favourite... of all TV shows
14 November 2002
I don't know what, but something about this TV series tugs at you. I think it's the fact that the characters seem so real, so everyday, that it's almost too easy to relate to them. It's -almost- too easy, because the war they fight is not a war that's over in a couple episodes, or put off to a later date. I'm not a war-loving, patriotic (heck, I'm Canadian!) kind of person, but the group comes from such different backgrounds and different ties that it's irresistible to love how they grow into the Wildcards. And to top it off... an ending that will rock you, whether you believe it satisfies you or not.
