Thuppakki (2012)
A shame to Indian Cinema
'Thuppakki' is a forgettable(or rather regrettable) experience.....almost two &half hours of boredom & nonsense film making....This movie is an insult to the Indian army & those who pay to watch it...It has no solid story, no solid actors, apart from Jayaram & Vidyut jamwal....Vijay's performance was worst...He needs to learn a lot from senior actors....There was almost nil expression on his face...Kajal agarwal was a mere showpiece...Jayaram had some funny scenes, which had no meaning or purpose...a wonderful actor wasted...Vidyut Jamwal was d next, without giving enough room for him...5 or 6 songs that was a migrane....Murugadoss is one of the worst writers i have ever seen....Showcasing Vijay as an army man & putting touchy music with some sentimental scenes doesn't prove anything for the Indian army...This is a Shame....
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
" Gotham! This is your liberation! "
Nolan has brought a comic book hero to a real life one. & he has succeeded 100% in it. There couldn't be another fitting finish to this.Nolan has brought a special charm to this franchise. He never left a stone unturned.Every thing is connected perfectly.Ras Al Gul,harvey dent, everything comes to connect.Joker has been left out in this movie, respect to Heath ledger. The casting is perfect.I should mention,Tom hardy's 'Bane' was brilliant & brutal. The background score was gripping & awesome. The movie grabs you to the screen once it starts. Christian bale was excellent as usual.Anne hathaway & Joseph gordon levitt was a welcome addition. The movie is tense, keeping you at the edge of the seat throughout.Overall, Christopher Nolan has proved yet again to be one of the best ever with his vision.Watch this with confidence, for you have a winner that will steal your heart.I rate it one of the best ever trilogies. This is the Gotham we never imagined about. But Nolan has showed us.This is it.Gotham! This is your liberation.
Dam999 (2011)
DAM 999....Damn boring...
Prologue: Watched this movie from 'Sridar'(theatre) in 3d today. As it was a movie by a keralite, & we are having a similar problem here in kerala , (Mullaperiyar Dam) the urge to watch the movie was very high. Read in newspapers that the script made to the Oscar library. So altogether, the expectations about this movie was high.
Story: Its all about the figure 999 which has got importance all along. Two mariners coming home. Both having their own personal problems. The director tried to connect the dam to the characters in the movie. Their emotions holding back like a Dam & finally dam breaks at the same time the emotions are also opened. I could understand the story of 'Inception' in one watch. But this was complicated. It fails to connect with the viewers.
Cast: Casting was like 'hmm.ok'. Thats it. Everybody did their part. But apart from the main actors, all others lacked professionalism. It was like they were made to act.You could feel, you are watching a movie. You couldn't live in it.
Music: There is no notable music to show up off in this movie. Background score was poor. Actually we have seen lot of movies, though being average, getting uplifted by the background score. The songs were not impressive.
Camera: Cinematography was good. But you don't notice it, since the movie is boring.
My Verdict: This movie is boring. Will make you feel like a loser. It fails to communicate with the viewers. Not at all recommended. Im gonna watch a good movie from my library & save my day. phew... 3/10.
Pranayam (2011)
Love is in the air
Pranayam is in one word, romantic. This movie showcases a different aspect of love. After the groundbreaking 'Bhramaram', blessy comes up with this simple yet superb movie. This isn't a popcorn movie. This movie speaks about love after marriage & also the love through different person's views. Whether you are young or old, healthy or wealthy or not, love remains love ultimately. Every frame of this movie is filled with love & it showcases the power of love.
The music of this movie is done by M.Jayachandran & its superb. The songs are good. The dialogues are also well written to suit this context. The screenplay was excellent. You don't see movies like these very often.Pranayam takes a different path from the usual bandwagon of romantic movies of the new age.
The casting was superb. Anupam Kher,Mohanlal & Jayaprada takes the lead. Mohanlal's screen presence is less compared to the other two. but he really steals the show. You can watch yet another brilliant performance from him. The newcomers are promising. Niveditha was really good & is sure to have a good future.
Overall Pranayam is a brilliant piece of work. It is not for the people expecting mindless comedy or brainless action. This movie is really enjoyable to watch. In one word, Romantic...
Final Destination 5 (2011)
Final destination is back...
Watched the first day first show in my city. After a huge disappointment in the 4th sequel, the expectations for this one was high. I should say, the franchise is saved. But i personally feel FD5 not surpassing the benchmark set by FD1,2&3. But this one is big enough to rock you. It follows the same pattern as in all the other FD movies. But it brings in new stuff. Watching it in 3d pulls your heart out,if you have a weak one. The new director, Steven quale is promising.Tony todd is hauntingly( i should say) superb.
FD5 is deadly insane. So you need to be tough to watch this movie. Overall i give it a 7/10. This is a must watch in 3d.Anyway Final destination is BACK....
Deiva Thirumagal (2011)
Beautifully innocent
A simple narration of love & affection between a father & his little daughter. Everything in this movie works wonders. Deivathirumakan keeps you glued to the screen from the word, GO. The movie excels in every department, be it the direction, screenplay, camera, casting, music etc.Anything you take from this movie, it is just beautiful. The stealer was obviously Vikram's performance. He just showed his brilliance. Its a good sign Vikram is shifting from superhuman roles to a down to earth & beautiful character like this.
The casting was perfect with Vikram leading the way.Baby Sarah was superb. She is so cute & adorable & performed really well.As always Nasser was brilliant.Anushka & Amala paul was just perfect.Santhanam handled the humour with ease & was really enjoyable.Every single artist in this movie did justice to their roles.
The screenplay was well written with not even a single scene exceeding the limits.Although the entire story is told with humour taking an important role, every emotion had its lion's share when it mattered.
Now to the music. It was one of the best. It just mixes with the scenes taking it to another level. The songs were superb, especially the 'Aariro' sung by haricharan. It brought tears from everyone's eyes.
The direction was brilliant. I think the location is Ooty. Even i could feel the coldness in the atmosphere (certainly not from the AC ;))Every scene in Ooty had a bit of myst & rain drops which added a beautiful ambiance.
Vikram should stick to realistic roles like these.( I mean down to earth),because he is just awesome to watch when he does the role of a common man. Coming to the conclusion, i thought 'Vaanam' was the best movie i have seen this year. Now I've changed my mind. Its certainly 'Deivathirumakan'.Its a must watch. Don't miss it.I give it 9/10.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
Transformers Resurrected...
The first thing i would like to say is I'm happy. After a disappointing 'Revenge of the fallen' , Transformers are back on track.Eye popping SFX, awesome 3d & an intriguing storyline. But Megan fox is really missed. The movie holds you tight to your seat till half. After that its an hour long war between decepticons & autobots-humans which you may feel 'too much'.
The casting was just perfect.Shia Labeouf delivers an awesome performance.Including John Malkovich was a welcome decision. Others are the same old pals who just does perfect. The background score was good. The SFX was something to talk about. Its simply superb & the 3D was done perfect making it immersing.
Michael bay has managed to resurrect the franchise.Overall this is good news for the Transformers fans. And one last thing.Remember this name when you are going to watch : Sentinel prime !!!
Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja (2009)
Good attempt....but overall, an Average movie..
Pazhssiraja was hyped by the media, newspapers, mammootty fans etc which misled everybody thinking that this movie is a gem. But this was only a good attempt. As M.T vasudevan nair, the maestro of screen writing who penned many great films joined hands with Hariharan, another talented director, everybody including me thought it would make a great movie. But when Oscar winner Resul pookkutty joined the bandwagon, we were pretty sure this would be a new dimension in malayalam cinema. The cast was pretty impressive with Mammooty & sarath kumar doing the top 2 roles. Also the tag of a big budget movie gave it never before expectations. I think all this made the people go blind watching this star studded movie. The story was strong, screenplay superb, good camera, fine music, but the direction was below par & so was the movie.
Many scenes in this movie lacked perfection. For eg: In a scene, sarath kumar rides a horse towards a cottage & instead of jumping from the horse, he is flying to the verandah. Blind fans enjoy such scenes.Actually i felt ashamed to see such a scene in a movie like this. Mammootty was not at his personal best though his fans wont agree. The English characters were OK.thats all. I think the filmmakers in malayalam doesn't think about perfection. They create superb stories & wastes the movie adding crap scenes like these.
The strong screenplay by M.T holds the movie.Music by Ilayaraja is simply superb & Locations & camera stands out.Sound mixing by resul pookkutty is fantastic.Pazhassiraja was rejected to be included at the prestigious IFFI film festival at Goa which itself indicate the limitations of this movie.
Overall, This movie will leave you thinking of many improvements which would have been done. Though mammootty fans wont agree with me, its certainly not a must see. Pazhassiraja is an average movie.I am personally disappointed at this movie. I give it a 5/10.
Shutter Island (2010)
Thankyou Lumiere brothers........Thankyou Leonardo Di caprio....
Im writing this review after watching the movie 5 times. I should say that i was blown away even the fifth time. Not just by the story, not just by the screenplay, not just by the acting, not just by the music but by each & everything in this movie which is just amazing. Its rare to find a movie like this.or maybe you wont find one.Every second of the movie holds you hard glued to it.and when you finish watching, you want to see it again. This movie makes you think again & again & every time you see this, you realise its a masterpiece.
The first person i want to congratulate is Leonardo Di caprio for delivering this unforgettable performance. I think he is growing himself into a legendary actor.Hats off to Martin scorsese. His direction stood out. The screenplay was superb congrats to Laeta Kalogridis.
The locations were superb & photography is eye popping.Every actor put up a best in life's performance. and the last dialogue...that cements this movie into ur memory & finally i want to thank Lumiere brothers. If they hadnt found an ocean called cinema, we would have missed this Pearl..called 'SHUTTER ISLAND'....
Avatar (2009)
I can't believe my eyes....
I just saw 'Avatar' from sridar, our dear theatre.I was astonished by this movie.James cameron is the most futuristic director ever born in this world & Avatar is the most advanced movie you'll ever come across.I cant think of a world beyond Avatar. It shows you the farthest limit of human imagination. The story & screenplay is so superb that you'll scream out after the movie saying 'I am blessed to see Avatar'.Its a masterpiece in movie-making. Don't compare it with classic dramas.Because all the action in Avatar is happening out of this world. So change the way you think. You'll love this movie.Everything goes well in this movie. The Highlight being the special effects. The world 'Pandora' is amazingly beautiful.Sam worthington cements himself to the big league.Joe zaldana was also the pick out.Nice background music thanks again to James horner. All i have to say is three words, Hip Hip Hurray........ 10/10........
2012 (2009)
Exhilaration in its high.....
I watched it today, the first day first show in my city.I should say this movie is outstanding for its special effects. This is another blockbuster from Roland Emmerich.Though you may feel an absence of a touching story, the story itself is what you see till the end.The acting was not top notch. The movie starts of with some speed, then slows down & it catches the speed we expect, as it goes on.
John cusack, amanda peet was good.Danny glover was not that good.Morgan freeman should have done his role. That would have been perfect.Overall this movie is a gift to the people for this years fall.Watch it in cinemas or you will miss it.I give it 8/10.
This Is It (2009)
An ideal homage for the king of pop....112 mins of living with MJ...
I saw it yesterday evening.I must say it was a nice experience. One would forget that michael is no more.'This is it' shows what michael had prepared for to rock us in his sold out shows. Its a 112 mins of living with michael. After watching this documentary u'll realize his hard work & commitment towards music & dance & to all the co-workers.You feel like you are standing by the side of the stage while he's dancing in front of you.Ortega has done a good job.Michael's voice is so sweet,i must say.The energy he creates in the stage even during rehearsals is awesome. He's sending message about Love & that's what he had been giving us all these years with his songs.Love you michael.Love you forever.
Ee Pattanathil Bhootham (2009)
one of the worst movies of the century....
If you like watching movies, never ever watch this one. This is my humble request to all my friends out there. An established actor like mammootty delivers one of the awful performances in Indian film history. That really puts a black mark & even brings out his limitations.Even a newcomer would have done this role more beautifully. The story also is so spattered. It has nothing to offer as it says.A complete collapse of film making.
Nothing in this movie is gonna interest you.So friends, go watch this movie if you want yourself tortured to hell.A shame to Indian cinema. i rate it 0/10.
Aaram Thamburan (1997)
Complete movie...
Aaraam thamburaan changed the face of action movies in malayalam cinema of that time.It excels in every part.May it be acting, music, location, camera, casting, story, screenplay this movie will blow you away with its brilliance. It has a rock solid story & screenplay written by Ranjith, who penned other great movies combined with excellent direction by Shaji kailas.
Mohanlal is the highlight of this movie. He delivers an outstanding performance. His diversity can be experienced from this movie. His majestic presence itself boosts the viewers to another level.
Another highlight of this movie is the role of 'Kulappulli Appan' done by late Narendra prasad. It remains a classic villain portrayal in malayalam cinema.Manju warrier, one of the most talented actress Indian cinema has ever seen, puts up a clinical performance.Late, Oduvil unnikrishnan also stands out with his brilliant acting.Music by late Raveendran master is classic. All the songs in the movie are evergreen hits.
Overall this movie is a must see if you love Indian cinema.I give it a 9/10.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
A gem of a movie
I started of watching this movie without any 'hype'. I knew it was a good film since it claimed the #1 spot in the IMDb top 250 movies. But after the credits rolled down,i very well understood why it claimed the #1 spot. This is a gem of a movie. If you missed it, then go watch it. It doesn't have speedy car chases, gripping war sequences or thumping action. But it conveys a strong & warm story to the viewers holding them close. I cant stress more. This is a 'must watch before you die' movie. or you'll cry in the heaven, having missed out this masterpiece... Morgan freeman & Tim Robbins are outstanding. They make the movie unforgettable with their outstanding performance. Each & everyone contribute their best in this movie. The background score is also superb, although it is less. I give it 9.5/10
Pavithram (1994)
One of the BEST movie in Malayalam
If a movie has a solid storyline, brilliant acting, superb music, beautiful screenplay it can be categorized as one of the best..& 'PAVITHRAM' certainly falls in that category. It is one of the movies that will always be remembered for its brilliance.Outstanding acting by Mohanlal(one of the finest actors in India) is the highlight of the movie. This film is set in a village in Kerala. The movie captures your heart with every scene being lit up with brilliant acting,music..The film has one of the most solid stories ever made in malayalam movie history.Supporting roles by nedumudi venu,Thilakan,Vinduja menon,KPAC lalitha, innocent, late narendra prasad etc is simply superb.Female lead,Shobhana is brilliant.Music is composed by Sharath which is outstanding..PAVITHRAM has a story that is realistic..
Overall this is a beautiful movie..Everybody who has a heart that cares will love this..One of the best movie I've seen till date..Mohanlal's performance will glue you towards this movie for sure...I rate it 10/10...
Narasimham (2000)
High Voltage action movie
Narasimham is a superb commercial entertainer. This movie portrayed another face of Mohanlal's acting skills. From the start to the end, the viewers are taken to various emotions of laughter, tears, anger, rush of blood etc.Every scene in the movie makes an impact with the viewers. It was good to see Mohanlal in an all new avatar. This movie stands tall with its strong story being the backbone.
Supporting actors like Thilakan,Aiswarya,Jagathy are the icing on the cake. The villain role played by late N.F Varghese is simply superb.Shaji kailas should be thanked for making this movie superb.Songs and BGM are good thanks to M.G Radhakrishnan.
It ran for more than 150 days in many cinemas in kerala.. Overall, this movie is a megahit.A must watch..super action thriller.. I give it a 9/10..
Sagar Alias Jackie: Reloaded (2009)
Super stylish.but.....substance less
'Sagar Alias jackie'is the sequel to the yesteryear hit movie 'Irupataam Noottaandu'.It was hyped as the most stylish Indian movie before its release..But unfortunately it remains all style and no substance.'Jackie' the smuggler played by Mohanlal(one of the most flexible actors in India) is simply superb. But Amal neerad couldn't compile a strong story to this all style package. From the start of the movie mohanlal appears in stylish costumes and gets in & out of luxury cars, shakes hands with other people with heart stopping background music.'Indu' played by Shobhana add some 'family' element to the movie.Bhavana plays a reporter with ease.Jyothirmayi's item number adds glamour.
Suman has played the villain role with power.but he wasn't given more time in this movie..All other co-stars including Jagathy,Manoj.k.jay an etc add flavour to this movie. The movie puts a sudden break at the climax..which irritates the viewers.Gopi sunder, the music director gives promise with above average songs.
Overall 'Sagar Alias jackie Reloaded' is watchable..at least for its style statement & thumping background score. Its not going to be a super hit,but it will for sure revolutionize Malayalam cinema...
Superman (1997)
A Superb family entertainer
I didn't have much expectations while watching this movie for the first time. But i was blown away by this movie.i should say this movie is a complete family entertainer. With a blend of comedy, emotions, songs, fight& investigations covered in a strong storyline. This movie remains among the top of commercial super hits.Rafi-Meccartin has showed their talent for creating super good commercial movies.Roles by the co stars all add flavor to the movie.Music is also a highlight of the movie. All Songs are touching and they can be felt with heart. I would like to conclude by saying that this movie is a Guarantied one.You wont be disappointed by this movie & you will see it again for sure...Three cheers for this one....9/10.
