Orphan (2009)

Surprisingly true to its genre.

There are way too many "horror" movies out in the world. Such of them (like House of Wax (2005), Blood of Dracula's Castle, The Uninvited, The Stepfather, Diary of the Dead, Prom Night (2008), etc.) that are honestly not scary at all. They don't stay true to their genre, and more of just a money-making fad that just attracts stupid teenagers into wasting their money by watching a horrible rendition of an over-used idea.

This is what I thought when I was first planning on watching Orphan. In fact, the first time I saw it (which I only watched only the first 10 minutes) I was like "Oh dear, it's how I thought." However, I should have given it more of a look. So I did.

To my absolute surprise, this movie was actually very good. To everyone who says the horror genre is dead, it's not entirely true. Orphan provides what most horror movie-filmmakers would be jealous of--depth of character and suspense. When I saw the dinner table scene where Daniel drops the F-bomb on the parents, I totally felt the emotion come from this little actor. Of course, Jimmy Bennett has had a very good career start (examples such as Star Trek, Hostage, and Polar Express). Engineer as Max was just so great, she could pull of a sad emotion like she was actually in the situation herself.

Fuhrman was excellently rolled. She had the guts to pull off a nearly unmissable Romanian accent. I would for sure have to compliment on her anger towards Farminga's Kate. Her acting has surpassed all my expectations for teenage actors.

If you haven't seen Orphan yet, I would highly recommend that you watch it. As Ebert has said, do not let your children see this movie.

Wait... What?

Honestly, what is wrong with you, Hollywood? Not only is this the WORST thing that has happened to you ---- you keep funding these "cheesy writers of Scary Movie" to make these movies. I mean, come on Carmen Electra, you know even better than them that you have potential! Stop portraying in parody movies!

See, I can't believe I am comparing "parody" to this movie. This movie has no "parody" or "comedy" in it, this is all referencing. All they need to do is see a movie title, take a line and a scene from a trailer, and turn it into a script. Never in my LIFE have I ever been so ticked off by you (Hollywood).

I mean, Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, you don't even care for the money, you just want to prove you can be a film-maker too, but that's not the point! Movies are something you should enjoy, and this... this is making bland jokes and pointless (as I may say "comedy) with fart jokes and people being hit with objects... or just getting hurt (but you realize that they are okay)?

Now please, STOP! You're ruining the name of "parody" and you are causing people to hate you even more!

Please, as a warning, DO NOT WATCH THIS.

A slowly moving action-packed film.

Warning: Spoilers
My whole family came to see this film with high expectations. The very beginning started very well, and kept making me happy. Though, it seemed a whole lot more than just 2 hrs and 30 minutes. Heath Ledger played an excellent role as The Joker, though, you never really find out what his motivation is. I know he thinks that people shouldn't try to be so serious and wanted to play games with Batman, but you never really find out if the story about his scars were true. I was very disappointed when Rachel dies, but I think that would be the only thing to make Harvey become the villain.

The ending, it was never told what happened to the Joker after he was caught, but I believe that's the point just before Heath Ledger died.

But, Bruce Wayne wasn't really the center of this movie. It was more focused on the Joker than anything else. And how the Joker got so many henchman is still a mystery to me.

My dad didn't like this film at all, mainly because it was too long, and he didn't like what happened in this film. I came out satisfied. I was happy with most of the film, and how amazing Heath Ledger did on his role.

All in all, this is an excellent film, but I think they needed to focus more on Bruce Wayne than just on the Joker.

Also, I didn't like it when Harvey dies in the end, because I thought he might move on in the next Batman film.

Wanted (2008)

Fast-paced flick with a few flaws and similarities.

What to say about this movie that hasn't been said? First off, it was pretty much just a rip on The Matrix, all with the physics-defying moves and the bullet curving and the slow motion, but I think that's the point of it. I mean, it continues the Matrix-style, but it never really fulfilled it. In the beginning, you see Wesley Gibson as a man, and the narrative was just like Edward Norton's Tyler Durden. A man who is stressed out in his daily life, and talks about the things that interest him (in this case, the keyboard). In the beginning, you see Wesley as a bullied person, by his over- weight boss who uses the stapler to make him more stressed, and also by his best friend who has sex with his girlfriend and calls him a "pussy".

Angelina Jolie's character comes in, saves him from Cross, who is supposedly the man who killed Wesley's father. She takes him into the Fraternity, where he is trained into an assassin. You see him get beaten up, get stabbed, and also get threatened. You find out that Wesley's stress level is just adrenaline, which helps him to become an assassin.

I found the "curving bullet" to be a cool idea, actually. When it was used in the ending, when Fox (Angelina Jolie) used it to make a round-house suicide, it was just corny. But the bullet colliding was good, too.

When you find out that Cross is Wesley's father, I was very disappointed. It was just another fail at an attempt to make a plot change, and make you go "Oh my God!". And how they explained how he was his father, and how he was trying to protect Wesley from going to the Fraternity was terrible. I mean, he was shooting him on the train, so how could that be "protecting" him?

There are some flaws, but I found this an alright movie. It isn't the best, and I don't think it's really worth seeing.
