The Woman King (2022)
It no apocalypto
I feel like this movie could have been great but the writing and also the character development is somewhat under developed. The script relies on cliche which is a shame as you often feel like the movie is just going through the required motions to get to the next development that is acceptable.
The casting and production design is good the locations are great. Cinematography is a bit stork standard and modern.
Everything is fine, but nothing is pushing the medium.
It's a solid 6/10 film. Digestible, accessible, uninspiring and overall a bit of a waste of time for most viewers.
Sorry guys.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Flawed film but ultimately great finale
The Sequel trilogy has always had its problems. This mainly comes as a result of Disney and the writers not having a plan mapped out before undertaking the trilling. That being said, I do think this film and ending benefits from the challenges presented to it from the Last Jedi. It becomes more original as a result.
Whilst the film will most likely remain divisive - I don't think that it ruins what comes before. There's a lot of anger surrounding the treatment of Anakin and the Skywalkers and how they no longer are key to the story but I disagree. They are the ones who ultimately bring balance. Without Anakin and all his descendants none of it would have been possible.
I think the film is very good considering it had a big job to do. It's the definition of efficient story telling, with every shot considered and propelling a hell of a story towards its conclusion. Could it have been better? Probably. But I do think we will all grow with these films over time and appreciate them with their flaws as part of the Star Wars legend.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Falls short - disappointed.
Wow lets totally forget about all the established Star Wars universe rules. The movie is full of plot holes, is sloppy, slow, and tiresome film making. They choose to conveniently forget about tractor beams, have force ghosts able to influence the physical realm, portray Luke as a bitter "old man", ruin Rey, make her a pointless passive protagonist, relegate Chewy to basically function as a glorified Uber driver for Rey, introduce a character like Rose that has less charisma than my big toe. Also the Harry Potter-esque Canto Bight scene with CGI small aliens and human faced dog horses that serve no purpose but to try prove a point about animal cruelty was just unnecessary. Spend time developing the Star Wars saga and do justice to the Skywalker story instead. Also the not so funny jokes that ruin the flow. Overall pretty darn disappointed.
