Run Uje Run (2020)

Seminal, touching, sad and funny
29 March 2021
This movie is nothing short of amazing. Partially because manages to be many things at once. It's stylistically seminal, It's touching, sad and existential. It's funny, ironic and silly. The music, written and performed by Uje himself, complements the storyline perfectly. I could go on and on about how my (Swedish) generation grew up on this kind of dark and ironic humor. How much it shaped us, etc, etc. But I'll just end this review now by recommending you see it for yourself instead. It's well worth the time.

The only downside is actually that it was too short. Feels like it could have been so much more. That maybe it deserved to be fleshed out a bit more. But hey.. that's just me looking very hard for minuses.

Dumb
3 March 2016
This would be the archetype of a dumb movie. It's one of those movies, you know, where all the characters are all trying to be wacky at all times, which quickly creates a surplus of "wackiness, for wackiness sake". The movie left me repulsed; the notion that many people probably think this is a wild and refreshing comedy. Let me be clear, I like wackiness just as much as the next person, but there has to be a balance of flavors, colors, attitudes or sounds within in any art-form. Another unbearable aspect of the movie is the worn out and cheap clichés. How about the group of Asians saying outrageous and "un-Asian" things, for comedic effect, for instance. It's funny because they're supposed to be shy and well mannered. Get it?

Bad
26 October 2015
This movie is like a lot of similar type of movies; meaning movies that aims to challenge preconceived notions of "what a lady should and should't be like". It quickly becomes banal, predictable and irritating. There's no depth of character here, because you sort of get the gist of the jokes before they're halfway delivered. Having said that; these kinds of movies can and have been saved by good performances. Unfortunately Amy Schumer doesn't deliver that. I don't know why scriptwriters and directors hit the same creative pitfalls every time a movie like this is to be made. We get it: here's an urban girl with a modern outlook on life who does what she wants, sleeps with whom she wants and doesn't apologize for it, etc etc.. good, but then what? A movie needs more than just a cliché of a character, predictable jokes and bad acting.

I fell for it!

This movie is really bad. The high points probably comes from cast and crew conducting some sort of pre-internet-release internet-campaign. Kudos to them and well done. You fooled me!

The acting is pretty bad, the editing is actually okay but the script/story and directing is just infantile. It's like a less-than-bright adolescent wrote the script, trying to sort of copy the gist of other horror movies, not paying any attention to details or believability of characters or story-progression. It's just a big mess, to sum it up in one sentence. The music was really good though... but probably because it was taken from Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.
