Wendigo (2001)
Huh?
13 June 2003
I rented "Ravenous" the other night because it's one of my all-time favorite movies and I wanted my son to see it. While at the video store, I came across "Wendigo", and thinking, "Hey, we can make a double feature out of this!", I foolishly added it to my rental stack. What a let down! Horrible horrible movie. As others have mentioned, the Wendigo is possibly the worst monster onscreen. It's a guy in a deer-suit. Instead of being frightened, my son and I were in hysterics! Not to mention, the choppy "hand-held" camera movements and pointless "fast-motion" effects made me want to vomit. There were some shots of the trees that were cool, but when cool shots of trees is the best you can get out of a film, that's pretty bad. I also despised the mother in this movie. I thought she looked way too old to be Miles' mom... she could've been his grandma! She didn't evoke compassion in me at all, so I was actually hoping she'd get killed...alas..."Dewey"/"Miles" was decent in this film... he really didn't have much to do except make that facial expression he's famous for... the eyes= wide- open, sharp- breath -in kinda face... If you want to see a GREAT film about the Wendigo myth, please please please rent/buy RAVENOUS. You won't be disappointed. WENDIGO is a waste of time, you're left thinking, "That's it?", and the characters are completely unlikeable.

Ravenous (1999)
He was licking me....
13 June 2003
I can't say enough about this film. It is a true gem. I made my son watch it the other night, and he loved it as well. Part comedy, part horror, part historical (albeit ficticious)part legend... it's hard to define the movie into one genre... it works so well on all the levels! Robert Carlyle is so awesome in this movie. He looks like a mini Charles Manson, which of course adds to his delicious (pun intended) charm. He's so evil, psychotic, brilliant... I can't even watch The Full Monty anymore without making comments that he's going to eat his dancing friends! Beautiful cinematography, excellent unexpected sountrack, top notch acting and directing and script lines that you'll be repeating for days afterward, this movie is in my Top 3 of all time!

Jackie's Back! (1999 TV Movie)
He Fell On That Afro Pick!
23 April 2003
I'm a huge Tim Curry fan, so I initially watched this for that reason, but I have to say, this is one of the funniest movies I'd seen in a while. "Jackie" is a fallen diva, descended from George Washington (according to her), about to make a comeback. I loved all the cameos, you can tell just by the people willing to make cameos in this that they thought it was a hilarious concept. The end is a bit too sappy, but I can forgive that. LOved "The Milkman".. my favorite scene is Jackie saying, "I never stabbed him with no afro pick... he FELL on that afro pick" and then the indentations on Milkman's forehead.... just beautiful! Great movie... I highly recommend it!

The Ring (2002)
Good, not GREAT
24 October 2002
Just came back from seeing The Ring with my 12 y/o son. We both thought it was entertaining, not the best horror film we've ever seen, but definitely creepy enough to linger in your head. I just had to post because I kept reading others post and ask "How did the images get on the videotape?". Well, we inferred that when the kids were there, trying to tape a football game on the tv, as they were directly *over* where Samara was, she magnetically transferred them with her mind. They were her memories! Duh!(Ok, she's a ghost, but she had that power when she was alive.... remember the xray -looking things in her file, and when she was talking to the psychologist? That was the same stuff that videotape is made of, folks!) Rachael was a horrible mother, I really felt very little for her.

All in all, since it didn't end when I thought it would, I give it credit for not going the cheesy, happy Hollywood ending route. 7 out of 10.
