Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)
Weak sauce!!
For one I am surprised that Guillermo del Toro put his name to this film as a producer let alone as a co-writer. It falls incredibly short in imagination and skill at either writing or directing as compared to not just anything else he's done but as far as other horror films in general go. The concept alone is not scary, "little creatures running around with wires and exact o knifes trying to poke or cut small abrasions into peoples legs" is not all that creepy. That sounds like "The Borrowers" gone bad. The only thing this movie had going for it was competent acting from some of the cast. In all I would not recommend this film to anyone that is either looking for a good Guillermo del Toro film or a horror film in general. I'm not quite sure why it was rated "R" either, no swearing, no nudity, and no genuine frights.
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011)
disappointing effort by talented people
I was hoping for a better Ghost Rider, the first movie was a let down but still entertaining enough. When I heard who the directors were for this one, my hopes were raised. Yes they delivered on action and their were moments of intrigue. Nic Cage's performance was top notch, but everybody else's was weak sauce. The script was weak and muddled. For some reason the two most bad ass characters in Marvel's Pantheon (Ghost Rider) and (The Punisher) keep getting poor adaptations. Also the old adage of never work with children is not always correct ( hence the films of Truffaut) but as far as action super hero movies go, it is. The whole anti-Christ story fell flat because of (and this sounds mean, but it is true) the kid's performance. Please stop trying to lighten up kick ass characters stories with stupid family oriented story lines, it never helps. I would not recommend this movie to any fans of the character or even fans of the directors. Unless their is a directors cut out their that is better like in the case of the Daredevil movie. Maybe sometime down the road somebody will get it right. I hope.
Yo soy el gallo (1981)
Yes!!!!!!!!!! The Rooster!
This movie is hard as hell to find I think it is only on VHS, but it is worth it. a hidden treasure for movie fanatics, a strange and amazing supernatural story about an adventurer of sorts who falls in love with a woman and must convince her family he's good enough for her. He drinks, he fights, and he sings. an amazing cover to the VHS that makes him look like Charleston Heston in seed of evil but in the actual movie he is short fat and not very good looking, yet that doesn't stop him from kicking butt. The movie didn't even have subtitles and I don't understand Spanish but it was still an amazing intriguing watch. something to do with music singing ghosts double crosses infatuation and donkeys, whatever, loved every minute of it. If you find a copy watch it and re watch it, share it with friends it is amazing.
Ball's Out! (2009)
awesome great movie
Saw this movie at the Bellingham film festival and thought
it it was greatly entertaining. Great Hard boiled tough guy story,
plenty of action and sexy women, lots of blood, everything a movie buff could want out of a film, it's a great short about a half hour long and well worth a watch. I highly suggest watching it if you get a chance. Gotta love sex guns and violence and witty banter.
The main character was akin to some of Tarantino's best creations. I hope this one makes it's way onto the independent circuit with a great deal of success I look forward to seeing this film at other independent festivals. Kudos to the film makers and actors in this film.
