The Hitcher (2007)
Half-assed try
The plot has a nice beginning, but after the initial ride the story line falls completely apart. Law enforcement would have backtracked to the gas station to find an explanation of the initial contact and discovered immediately the corroboration of the story.
Helicopter Pilots get their training from the armed forces. Those in Law enforcement would have maintained an observational height rather than come upon the chase scene at road height thus observing the black trans-am. With such a violent criminal the Sheriff would have deployed and/or asked for more air support to maintain once again situational awareness over the transport convoy.
Any incident as violent and crossing multi-jurisdictional lines as this and they would have kept the 'Hitcher' incarcerated for days on end before moving him. Moving this 'Perp' would have been a group effort between local, State, and Federal authorities including more than just two 'Sherrif's vehicles and 4 Sherrif/deputies.
Nice ending, poor writing and directing.
Inside Moves (1980)
Excellent prose on the Human condition
Inside Moves delves into the psyche of the Human condition. The story begins with the main character attempting suicide and after months in hospital finds himself residing in a neighborhood in which most are handicapped through one accident or misfortune of those fortunate enough to survive. As he recovers he makes friends with the local bar clientele where he finds he has a brotherhood of misery. The bartender who has disabilities of his own is afforded a shot at redemption via an operation and the ability to play pro sports.
This story illustrates the twists and turns of the good and bad we all face in everyday life. If we are lucky we can find our own Max's Bar with its cast of characters that form an ad hoc family from the castaways that humanity turns its back upon once one physical/mental frailty manifests itself on any given individual. The story raises the question, is it better to have a family of relatives foisted upon a person out of religious/social convictions or imposed upon them via need, proximity, and mutual interest?
Welcome to Flatch (2022)
Reminiscient of small town Americana
Having grown up in and around many a small town in rural Ohio and having lived in several other out-of-state small towns this show is reminiscient of how all communities have their eccentricities and each personality is suited for the local mindset that affords the neighbors of its community its indicative and unique comfort zone. Each town is never EXACTLY alike but only a reflection of their honesty and caring that bring that community's 'Life-Lite' where each generation produces its own progeny into the fabric of what we all hold dear as Values.
Just like My name is Earl, Parks and Rec, or the Office, it's another Comedy/Mockumentary on a smaller scale with similar touchstones of Americana that are comical when they fall flat as posted to the masses of the TV audience.
If you like the Office, Parks and Rec, or My name is Earl, you'll enjoy this sitcom, its a slice of what gives our country our own je ne sais quoi and who we all LOVE!
Traci Townsend (2007)
Truisms are rarely entertaining
Although the story may try to reach a broad spectrum of relationships it doesn't connect when grasping the salient qualities of what makes the commitment to the most important marriage decision. I enjoyed and applauded watching Traci taking the time to follow up with her past relationships but there could have been a retrospective on the anxieties of day-to-day long-term commitment. How that familiarity can breed its own contempt and how do relationships deal with long-term mundanities? What happens with forces outside the relationship? How do they affect the relationship? The influences pertaining to loss of job, potential in-laws, friends and of course the ever probable ever-lingering questions of conception and the directions relationships head while raising children of their own.
Isn't It Romantic (2019)
Unexpected but much appreciated
Well crafted imagery of a antithesis of her 'Real" world. The jokes abound and had me rolling on the floor.
Mrs. Fletcher: Care Package (2019)
After the Thrill is Gone
I enjoy this series as it delves into how we mature as people moving forward throughout life. How we learn to interact when growing into college, transitioning into new gender roles, or becoming a divorced empty nester.
The dialog deals with these topics in a mature manner.
Watchmen (2019)
Slowly evolving still ripe with potential
On many different facets I/we may be seeing an alternative form of storytelling. After episode 2, (Martial Comanche Horsemanship), it seems we have what may be our Protagonist (Regina King) ensconsced in the trappings of her DEEPLY held beliefs that she is on the prevailing side of righteousness in a Totalitarian society. So far we have seen this Superwoman battle criminals who have not only invaded her home, her way of life, her family and friends only to meet her Biological father who has just planted a seed of doubt of 'What If' EVERYTHING she was led to believe in society is wrong. From the ways of being raised to KNOW right from wrong to fighting for her perceived brand of JUSTICE as Sister Knight in this alternate universe.
Her character Angela Abar is coming into focus as Director/Creator Damon Lindelhof bit by bit seems to be building a wider worldview of a Totalitarian Estate and its affects on a society split between the Haves/Have Nots where Rorschach vigilantes give rise to other factions in this fractured Earth with its own set of laws not governed by a universe we know.
We may even be being drip-feed the impetus of the hows/whys of the forming of the Minutemen, could they possibly be another of many cadres of case solvers or be a post Minutemen scenario that is gently enticing us ep. by ep.
Joker (2019)
Bad story line Joaquin Phoenix's Star OUTSHINES ALL
Joaquin Phoenix performance was beyond GREAT! He alone should get an Oscar nod for his portrayal of a psychotic young man on the brink of destruction and his fall into madness.
Problem in my view that I had was that after all the character development there was no real catalyst that had him pull in the strings that made Society go mad. If confronting Thomas Wayne was the defining moment who/what was the tie-in to the individual killing the Waynes as they left the proverbial theater? Shouldn't there have been more hooks with his Underworld networking? Shouldn't there have been more flashbacks relating to his abuses and/or his Mother's relationship? What happened to the tragedy of his 'Permanent Smile'? Where are there any threads for 'Pennyworth'?
Idk, the Acting was BRILLIANT, INSPIRED but I believe the story line fell short of being INTRIGUING or even ENTICING causing me to want for more. ....
Movies like the 'Bat' series are now taking on a Genre distinctively all their own, but the 'Origins' need MORE "Tie-ins' or better 'Hooks" to make us leave the theatre 'WANTING" for the next before wondering where are you going with this story.
A Fantastic Fear of Everything (2012)
Hilarious and Sublime
Simon Peg is hilarious as a completely neurotic alcoholic writer consumed by his fear and loathing. Peg brings his absurdly neurotic character the tongue-in-cheek subtle English panache that many American audience members may not grasp but once realized gives an even greater depth of character to this deeply disturbed individual. The twists and turns his mind takes us is deliciously paranoid and realized when the minor chore of going to the laundry is revealed to be a good reason for the character's agoraphobia.
Welcome to Marwen (2018)
Courageous Production Choices should be seen by all
In a world filled with Dinosaurs running amok, fantastical Magic and super pseudo-science tales it is a shame that the general public has not seen this story taken from REAL events and the TRUE Hero of Mark Hogankamp's triumph in overcoming his demons thrust upon him by a group of vicious small minded individuals. His channeling of his antagonists are an inspiration to all who have been accosted by a similar trauma and his real life implementation of articulating conflict in his Belgian village with the Nazis and the 'Witch' Deja Thoris during WWII is something all of us that have struggled with addiction to medication for a normal life after trauma struggle with. Robert Zemekis has done a wonderful realization of Mr. Hogankamp's struggles and triumphs. I am so glad it was recently shown on Premium cable, this gem of triumph of the Human Psyche should be seen by everyone.
Rel (2018)
I like the writing
Rel's subject matter deals with problems and emotions many of us go through in a relevant yet comical/satirical fashion. Each week's topic is not just a one-sided perspective on contemporary morays. The most detracting is Mr. Howry's injection of another character into the mix. It takes away from the poignancy of what I think is a fantastic show.
