La otra conquista (1998)
Informative and Intriguing
The Other Conquest was very interesting because I never knew about the Atec Indians and the history of Mexico and their culture. I thought it was very informative but at the same time the topic is so large that I would really have to do much more research to understand and relate to the characters even more.
The set design and detailed costumes in the film really brought the history of these people to life. The music really helped me understand how different the Indians were to the Spanish and its quality brought emotion to each scene. The variety of shots, angles, filters and lenses provided a rich quality to the film and the acting was nothing less than sincere passion on the screen.
There were misconceptions between the Catholic and Christian religion as being identical, however the fictional story of Tepulitzan and his inner obsession with his god was intriguing.
Annie Hall (1977)
Spontaneous Romance
Annie Hall was very interesting because Woody Allen broke the fourth wall by talking to directly into the camera, and other random characters in the film who happened to know his life. It gave the film funnier because those choices were so random in the midst of the story unfolding on the screen.
This film to many people is a classic because of all the moments Woody Allen shows in this film make other people think about their own crazy experiences with someone they were in love with and how it didn't work out no matter how much they tried. The boldness to break so many rules in cinema and still accomplish a great success inspires me to go outside the norm.
Fa yeung nin wah (2000)
Mysteriously Romantic
Although the film was a love story it was suspenseful and mysterious to me because I never knew what was going to happen next. I was always trying to figure out what was the characters true motive behind certain actions.I also was anxious to see what was going to happen next which was a gift in a romance film. The angles and shots of certain objects and body parts was a good way to tell the story without it being so obvious what was going on.
The cinematography was brilliant and the other elements of this film complimented it very well like the costumes, set design, music, and color schemes of the film. Ms. Chan's costumes revealed so much about her character and insecurities inside because she always dressed up and presented her self in a beautiful way to make sure people did not feel sorry for her loneliness. Her dresses reminded me of a soldier's armor because of the long neck and two sleeves and she seemed to be well covered and protected but beautiful. The music was so slow and at some points it dragged the film along to help us understand the frustration of two people in love holding back their passion for one another. It creates a frustration so you can relate to what the characters are feeling. The use of color made it gloomy in their apartment building which helped me understand that Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chan's mysterious emotion for each other is about the only excitement around in their life and surroundings.
Very artistic and challenging to watch because it challenged me to be patient and allow the love story to unfold and it grieved me of how I expect in a romance film for two people to fulfill their selfish desires regardless of their immoral choices for the false illusion of love which is emotion.
Vals Im Bashir (2008)
Unique and strategic way to retell the experience of war
After watching the film, it definitely became the most disturbing and unique ways to retell someone's personal experience of war. The animation allowed me to not automatically turn my brain off to the connection of a war film since I have seen so many. It provided a way of escape so that I can just sit back and open my self up again to what war was like for another person. The animated characters were so detailed that I can see the lines on their face move as they were talking which made me believe the characters. The pornography in the middle of the film and the few dreams with naked people seemed like a way to add in entertainment value for most people to enjoy and actually distracted me from understanding the deeper themes in the film. The color scheme of certain scenes were very strategic to create different moods through the story and I thought that this film was the most creative films about war that I have ever seen. The content was so real and the way it was told had so many formalistic qualities to it but never taking away from its reality. The ending was great to switch to real life because it concluded everything I saw about war in the most effective way and left me thinking of how horrifying war really is.
