When Trumpets Fade (1998)
Mediocre Movie
This was more of a drama/entertainment film than a credible account of anything that did or could have happened. The acting was nothing special, and in fact a little disappointing, and definitely detracted from the story. It also focuses mostly on two characters throughout, which, even in other movies is generally avoided, as more characters are at least more developed even in supporting roles where they are not in this movie. However, it was well filmed with decent picture and sound editing. The sets were also fairly well designed and the costumes and props were good too. The end was also disappointing and somewhat abrupt. The original footage was a nice touch, though. There were some inconsistencies but nothing major. Hurtgen forest campaign was no picnic. I was there. Saw my buddies all torn up. Darn them krauts.
Band of Brothers: Day of Days (2001)
Misdrop to Machineguns
Though one may not have seen the first episode in the series, it's still easy to appreciate from the limited introduction the mood of the story, and get into the plot, as the story explains itself throughout, all the while maintaining a fast pace and intensity. I was also struck by the lack of soundtrack or musical accompaniment that prevails in many action scenes in other movies or series. Despite this, and possibly because of this, the realism is increased if anything. The audience isn't spared the blood and carnage that has become a theme in recent war films, which, contrary to older ones that decreased graphic content and upped the heroics, goes to show the true nature of war as apposed to the "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" view shown in John Wayne-esquire films. Rather than an inappropriate element that should be censored or taken down a notch, this should be incorporated into other films of the genre lest there be any false notions of the true nature of war-especially on a man-to-man level.
Midway (1976)
Damn! Another War Classic With Gun Fanatic Charleton Heston
Overall, this was a decent offering for the resources available. The sub-plot of the whole interracial love thing was more or less useless, and seemed more like a time filler than an important part of the film. As far as the story and its relevance and the portrayal thereof, it captured adequately the point of the battle and the sequence of events. I'd give it a 7 out of 10, due to the fact that I'm just used to a little more finesse, and am easily entertained by shiny stuff and loud noises. Midway Was Really Important. M.W.R.I. Sweeeet stuff I have a love-hate relationship with it. Spoiler Alert! Actually, no. Not a spoiler. Have fun and enjoy watching.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Saving Private Ryan.....Epic Fail. (JK)
Opening sequence sets the bar high for the rest of the movie, but the standard of historical accuracy and (sometimes) brutal realism is well maintained throughout, while battle and war scenes are woven between short, albeit relieving breaks involving the less gruesome aspects of the conflict, such as music from the time and stories of home and backgrounds which add to the feasibility of the plot, and make the characters more dynamic. Though some might find the extensive and intense gore too prevalent, to me, it exhibits the true cost and effect of war that is generally left out of lesser films.
Ethan Hinch is wrong. Steamboat Willie German and the German who kills Mellish are different.
