My daughter got me into the "Gilmore Girls" two years ago when she said "Dad, I really think you'll enjoy these DVDs"....I thought "Seriously?" But after one episode, my wife and I were hooked and we watched the entire 7 seasons in less than a week. Rapid fire dialogue; likable characters; beautiful settings; all kinds of situations....the series was wonderful...so you can imagine how excited my wife and I were when we heard about "A Year in the Life"...It was good but what's up with the musical and tango sequences? Did they not have any better ideas? They felt like time-fillers. Why was Sutton Foster in this one? Violet? Who the heck is she? I know she's some Broadway queen but other than that...Why put her on "A Year in the Life"? If this does come out on DVD, it's a bet I won't purchase it...nice try but not as good as the series.

I Wish It Were Truly Fantastic....

But alas..it's not. I saw the original Broadway show with Angela Lansbury back in the 70's and it was a fantastic show. I was really anticipating an equally good movie when the movie came out. Heck, the newspaper movie poster that was in the movie section of the papers was a sight to behold. All that art-deco! I was enthralled with that. When I saw the movie when it first came out, it was so hard to sit through it. It was just awful. I thought Beatrice Arthur looked like a man in drag. I will admit, Lucy did wear some pretty fantastic costumes but I swear, that white, wide-shouldered dress suit she wore while singing "Bossom Buddies" with Bea Arthur was just ugly-fugly. Lucy was not the best choice to play Mame. I'm sorry her movie career ended with this dud. She could have done so much better. RIP Lucy, you borough joy to millions of fans but when this movie came out..I'm sure there were major disappointments galore.

However, I have an issue with these types of movies that make out like all your problems will be resolved for the better and things will get so much better in your life.
Like, c'mon....Christians know better than to think all their problems are going to be wiped out because they turned to God.
Sometimes God doesn't erase the problems for you like He did for the car salesman.
Imagine! Selling all the cars in one day because he decided to clean up his act? Geeze,
I wish my life would have been that easy when I became a Christian.
Not a very realistic portrayal of the Christian life.

I was expecting something along the lines of "Coal Miner's Daughter" or "Sweet Dreams" when telling the story of Hank Garland. To me it came across as a "first-time" movie that needed to be re-done to look more professional. I guess it's just me. However, the 1950's ambiance was fantastic with the fashion, furniture and especially the cars. WOW. I just wished they included more of the songs Hank Garland wrote. I did download the MP3 of the album and listen to it often. Spoiler ahead: The guy who played Elvis sings a fantastic version of "Amazing Grace". It sounded just like him. I just wish that was included in the MP3 soundtrack.

It really didn't hold up. However, Al Pacino was very good as the aging Michael and I was glad to see Diane Keaton's role as Kay expanded a bit. Their scenes together were very touching. I am confused by all the negative comments about Sofia Coppola's role as Mary. I thought she did very well.
The movie was choppy in some parts and I was very dissatisfied with the ending. SPOILER AHEAD: After the massacre at the opera and after Michale's tormented screams...it then cut to an aged Michael before he dies. What happened between the death of Mary and his death of old age? What did Kay do? Anthony? Vincent? Connie? I guess I will never know the answers.
Talia Shire sure changed from the submissive Italian wife in Part I to a murderess in Part III.

Hallmark as done it again. This was a wonderful first Christmas movie for the 2009 year and I intend to purchase the DVD.
I turned off the lights, turned on the Christmas tree lights, and my wife, our two sons and I sat, caught up in this wonderful, heart-touching story.
Of course, the Hallmark commercials were an added touch.
Yes, I'm sentimental and go for these types of things...but I'm not ashamed.
The young man who played the young boy was so dead-on in his portrayal.
The mom and dad were spectacular in their portrayal as well.
Thank you Hallmark, for this wonderful presentation.
