Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Under the Cloak of War (2023)
My favorite episode so far
I am really not one to normally like episodes or movies of anything that show much in the way of anything having to do with war, but this episode really fleshed out the Doctor M'Benga and Nurse Chapel characters and gave us a really good background history on the "Klingon wars".
I honestly think Babs Olusanmokun and Jeffrey W. Byrd deserve Emmys for this episode.
War is not an easy thing to make a TV show about, but Star Trek writers, staff and directors are known for doing their homework and getting things right, and this episode has a very intense vibe that I'm sure some military veterans may find it hard to watch. It's a difficult subject. The depth of emotional turmoil that the Doctor finds himself in was such good acting!!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
SO SO BAD
If they have to try this hard to draw in more viewers, with this and the cartoon episode, just DON'T.
NO ONE came here for cartoons and musicals and I could care less if these actors can sing.
This show is CLEARLY geared towards older fans who remember the original show, and that showed with the details they've put in to really echo the flavor of the original, but it's like halfway through they fired all the writers and brought in the cheap replacements. This is utter garbage and a COMPLETE WASTE of 1/10th of the minuscule number of shows we get with one "season".
The amount of gimmicks pulled out does not at all bode well for Season 3. Not to mention trashing two relationships in one episode. WHY?
But then again between cheap streaming services not wanting to pay seasoned actors, and the writers/actors strike, I seriously doubt there will be a season 3.
But really REALLY POOR CHOICE here folks. F-
Australien skies (2015)
Dude needs a tripod- I turned it off half way through.
Spoiler-Balloons, birds and a whole LOT of fuzzy jerky film.
When you start off a film filming the guy walking out of a train station, you know it's gonna be lame.
All this guy's footage is fuzzy, extremely jerky and the one that was clear, it cut out just as you could see a shape.
The guy thinks "they're talking to him" and that he's special. Yikes that's mental illness.
I did NOT catch before hand that it's called AustrALIEN skies. SMH.
And when we got to "they're not really stars, they sit up there and pretend to be stars", I turned it off.
Lots of helicopters are black (medical ones in the US for starters)...yeah this is a whole lot of edging toward Q silliness. Nope.
Escape from the City (2019)
Love it here in the US, please bring it back!
I watched in on Hulu, loved seeing so many beautiful places in AU, but then Hulu took it away and it's not available.
Why people in AU and UK think American's wouldn't be interested is beyond me, except for "rights". Please figure that out, there's no reason we shouldn't be able to watch AU shows.
I loved seeing so many places in Australia and really enjoyed the house searches, seeing the differences in architecture and the distinct styles that make Australia unique. SO many beautiful places!
I really enjoyed all the presenters as well. It's as good OR BETTER than Escape to the Country. PLEASE bring it back to the US!
Vanished (2019)
One Missing Hiker FOUND 3 years before this came out!
What garbage. I should have known when I recognized the "Ancient Aliens" announcer on this that it was going to veer into Native American spirituality, portals and pseudoscience. I'm surprised they didn't bring up aliens.
To google and find out that one of the hikers showcased here was FOUND THREE YEARS before this was made, of which they make NO mention, is ridiculous.
And to know that this guy sat down in front of the first hikers widow and explained that he might have gone through a portal is just garbage. It's using elderly people for profit. It's disgusting.
And when they veer into talking about old cases to prove their theory, it's just bad.
Don't waste your time, I'm telling you.
Dead North (2018)
Great doc but YIKES the story is gory!
I was expecting a missing persons case. The details were far more gory than I expected. It was a good documentary, well filmed. They did a great job explaining the detailed story and how they figured things out. I was NOT expecting that level of detail which was really shocking. And I wish they'd have spent a bit more time on the backstory at the end. A bit more "what makes someone a killer"? They could've actually made this another hour or so longer.
Definitely worth a watch but just know there's some pretty graphic bumps ahead. Definitely not your usual who-done it.
Would recommend for sure.
Lucky Hank (2023)
Loses steam hard in the middle
I got through the first 7 episodes and would have given it about a 4, because it just got really boring. But the last episode pulled it up a bit. There's not much to talk about in a mediocre school in a mediocre town. I think they should give a lot more time to the wife and her adventures, finding her own voice/feet/life, but Hank should keep teaching.
One odd spot was that there were laughs in the first 1-2 episodes, then it just got boring, and sad, but some of the best laughs were in E8. KEEP THAT UP. That part!
But overall, this is pretty mediocre, really only for folks that are actually IN academia. Not sure why the stellar actor chose a mediocre book about a mediocre man. It's pretty bland.
Expedition X (2020)
Faux Native Americans-that's gross
First episode (season 1, Mammoth Cave) that I watched and they had a fake Native American on the show.
That's disgusting and offensive. You could have contacted an actual enrolled Native person, a historian or even someone with a "real" Native name but instead you paid some "expert" LOL to say what you wanted. You faked and appropriated their culture for entertainment.
"Real" Native Americans would at least want their tribal affiliation noted and would tell you what college they got their expert education from. The fact that you chose this woman shows how little you did.
You could have given proper representation to the indigenous people in that area, Tsalaguwetiyi, Shawandasse Tula, and S'atsoyaha, but you chose not to.
I suggest you start doing the work to understand the difference and why it's important.
If you're going to cite Native American resources make sure they're REAL.
