La otra conquista (1998)
Extremely Well Made!
This film was inspiring because the protagonist stuck to his roots, he would give up his body to the Christian religion but not his soul. I have never fought so hard to keep something. The protagonist fought hard to find a way to connect both religions, that played a major role in his life, into one. The locations in this film were beautiful. The monastery in which the protagonist was sent to be converted , the pyramids, and even the caves were the woman was being sacrificed, truly portrayed the beauty of these location in which they were set. The music was also beautiful, it represented the two worlds. The Ethno music represented the Indian world and the classical music represented the Spanish world. It is amazing that Mr. Carrasco wrote, edited, and directed such a high level film. The scene were a woman is being sacrificed is amazing. You are taken into their world and experience a ritual as if you were there. The emotions of the Aztecs was portrayed so beautifully. It was as if they were in a trance, they were set on pleasing their mother god that they would do anything. The camera work was amazing it looked like an Italian painting, beautiful and deep. Overall this movie was educational and extremely well made. I would recommend this movie to everyone; It is so complex I even recommend to see more than once, to be able to take it all in.
Idi i smotri (1985)
Realistic!!
The reality of this film is amazing. I felt as if I were in the scenes, whether it was an explosion, a love scene, or death scene, you were shown the results of these events happening as if it were happening to you. The use of the hand held camera made me feel as if I were actually following the protagonist step by step. The disappointment the protagonist feels when he could not deliver the cow to feed his people, I was saddened because he tried so hard and had gotten so far. The scene were the chapel is being burned down, was so emotional and scared me. Seeing this happen right before my eyes and the idea that this happened is truly tragic. The actors performances were so real. Glasha's character going crazy not knowing how to feel, act, or what to do. The protagonist not only mentally but had physical changes through out the movie. He started out as this naive boy and grew into a man who has seen everything. This film was possible because of perestroika and glasnost and marks a new beginning for Russian film making. I am glad I got to see it.
Dom za vesanje (1988)
Whole different world
Kusturica has made a great film about Gypsies. The protagonist (Perhan) goes on a life changing journey were he would do anything to survive. He is put into a world of stealing and has to leave behind his loved ones, his grandmother, sister, and girlfriend, and be someone he is not. Perhan gets a taste of being the big boss only to be thrown out and left on his own. He expresses so many emotions in this film such as revenge for Ahmed for deceiving him the entire time and has no other choice but to kill him. I feel the music played a huge role in the gypsy culture such as when Perhan leaves with Ahmed, a band plays him a farewell song as he is driven away. The music expresses their emotions, lives and the events that happen in it such as the wedding and funeral at end. The music was beautiful something I had never heard before. The director did an amazing job at showing us the gypsy life. I felt he did not interfere with the story and kept it very real; That shows a quality director. I know nothing about the gypsy culture and it is amazing the struggles they go through. This film is not only dramatic but has funny, happy, and sad moments as well and is very balanced.
Le fantôme de la liberté (1974)
Brilliant
Bunuel is amazing the idea that all of this could be real is awesome. This movie is what i would call out there. he comes up with the most twisted ideas and yet if you think about it isn't so twisted it makes perfect sense. Everything you see in this film, could possibly happen or is happening somewhere somehow. This film is brilliantly made and has great stories and the transition from one story to the next is fantastic. This film will really make you think about the idea of freedom and what you would do if you had all that freedom. At one point or another we have thought of something so bazaar and placed it realistically in our minds, we keep it in our minds of coarse, but not Bunuel, he has mixed up reality and come out with an alternate reality.
Yuki yukite, shingun (1987)
Wow!
This could be as real as it gets, as far as documentaries go. The protagonist is trying to get the truth out and give some piece of mind to families about how their relatives died and why. In my opinion the Protagonist went to far on some cases. He got the answers he wanted but was it really worth it to spend most your life in solitary confinement? The Director is amazing to be able to film all these events and let the protagonist do things his own way and not get involved is unbelievable. the director takes a lot of risks and i believe that is why he made a great film that does not hide the truth, you see things as they are really happening not as he would like you to see them. Although I do not like how the protagonist approached things, he was strong man and new what he wanted and he would do anything to get it. His passion was to get the truth and that is what he did.
El espíritu de la colmena (1973)
Who am I?
The protagonist, Ana is trying to see who she is and were she stands in life. She begins to see things and does not know if they are real. she enters an incredible adventure trying to find herself identity. She goes through what many children perhaps go through, trying to see who they are, what is real and what is in their imagination, experiencing the idea of death, fear, and trust. Ana see's things she does not know if they are real. Reality plays a major role in this movie for Ana. she must find out everything herself and experience things that help her find her identity. At the end when she says, "I am Ana," I believe she has found her identity and understands life as it is and her identity.
Fa yeung nin wah (2000)
Fantastic!
The music is amazing it put me in a trans the use of the instrumental music playing when Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chan are thinking of one another or are spiritually connected is beautiful the music is open to interpretation of what they are feeling. They are so close together but yet do not see what is passing them by. When "Aquellos Ojos Verdes" plays while the two are together reenacting what their spouses do or did when they were together, I felt sad because the two were together but not, they were all each other had and yet still alone. The line "We won't be like them" is fantastic. It opens my eyes to realize not everything is so black and white, love is not easy and you can't always be with the one you love. What began as an innocent meeting became a love story of two people who will never be together.
