Mulan (1998)
Good for little girls
This movie is a little violent, but not gratuitously so. What I really liked is Mulan taking charge and saving herself rather than waiting for the man to help her. Incidentally, it's the men that need Mulan's help in several parts of the movie. Recommended for little girls 3 and up.
Barbie as Rapunzel (2002)
Not too bad if you're 2
My 2 year old daughter loves this movie. I find it hard to sit through, with numerous plot holes and terrible dialogue, not to mention annoying animation. However, it's (almost) completely nonviolent and has a pretty good message. My daughter particularly likes the dragon character, Penelope. Overall, a pretty good kids movie, if not cutting edge.
Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001)
Fun for preschoolers
I was amazed to see the low rating this movie was given! My daughter absolutely loves it. The movie highlights real ballet steps and the original Tchaikovsky score, performed by th London Symphony. The plot is sweet, Barbie is a good role model, and there's a wonderful message. It also almost completely non-violent. The evil rat is wonderfully voiced by Tim Curry. I thought this Barbie movie was much better than Rapunzel but it's certainly rated lower. I have to echo some other comments by saying I've seen it around 100 times with my 2 year old and it's still not completely boring!
