A Man Called Otto (2022)
Why would Tom Hanks act in a movie this poorly written?
Nothing in this movie is believable. ANy research on depression and suicide? Hard to believe that Tom Hanks signed up for this. The worst Ton-Hanks movie ever. Cliches rule in this movie. Character development non existent. Comedy drama? Nothing funny or dramatic. Why was everyone so invested in "Otto". Fifty million budget? Where did the spend the money? It is not a character study, because these characters don't exist. The writer needs to talk to people who have actually been depressed or suicidal. Otto despite being :"depressed" has a lot of energy to invest in cats, children, neighbors, etc. No identification with protagonist(?) because the character is not real.
Thomas a Peeper (2023)
Refreshing. Funny.
They don't make comedies like this anymore. Good character development, sprinkled with philosophical verbiage. Good writing and acting. No wasted dialogue. Cut very clean. Shot in several interesting locations including somewhere in Europe? Woody
Allen-ish in places. Not your typical 3-act story, a character-study of sorts, but still an interesting story. A lot of night shots which looked professional despite the apparent limited budget? Just don't see movies like this in the mainstream "movie factories". This kind of creativity is missing in a lot of movies made these days. Refreshingly funny, creative.
I'ma Reck (2020)
Hilarious with a touch of philosophy
If you like the Beverly Hillbillies you will probably like this movie. A wide range of characters, from semi-sophisticated to totally unsophisticated. It even has character development and a well developed plot. It also has a philosophical layer. More going on than what appears on the surface. Cheerful.
Sweet Magnolias (2020)
Acting?
The acting in this movie is poor. I don't believe any of the characters. How does a movie like this get a 7+ rating? I would recommend acting lessons, although not sure this would fix it. It's one of those things, you either "have it or you don't".
The Sea of Trees (2015)
Writing is a problem
Never identify with any character. Don't really like him, and never cared whether he croaked or not. Spent part of the time on social media after about 20 minutes. Mostly writing problem and of course directing.
Brad's Status (2017)
Good writing for a change
Not the same ole Hollywood superficial bull. Very good writing, rarely seen in most movies these days. Probably over the head of most. Editing needs a tiny bit of tightening. A little slow especially in the beginning. Very good movie despite the "6" rating. More philosophical than most movies.
A Private Dancer in Mom's Kitchen! (2020)
HIllarious - more philisophical-intellectual than the average movie
Thought provoking. A Woody Allen-ish comedy. If you are in to explosions and car chases, probably not your movie (although there are 3 or 4 gun shots and one fast-car ride). In traditional black-and-white format. (It appears that only two or three people made this movie.)
Judy (2019)
Writer?
Excellent acting and superb singing can not save this movie from mediocre writing, especially for the first 70 minutes.
To Whom It May Concern (2016)
Writer you need to do more research
Not believable. I'm not sure the writer or the main character really knows what a person would look like, talk like, feel like, etc. who was planning on "checking out". Bad writing. Didn't believe it (lead character depressed or distressed enough to plan a suicide). It was more of a joke after the first 8 minutes. Mr. writer, I think you need to talk to several people who have actually been clinically depressed, severely distressed, etc.. 7.2 average rating?
The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019)
Something is fishy?
This was one of the worst movies I have seen this year and I have seen a lot. Who is rating these movies? Suddenly it seems as if the ratings are bologna. Sundance movies are often rated high because they have the "Sundance" publicity attached, but they often choose movies that are politically correct and not because the movie is actually good, in my opinion. Acting was good, although the characters boring. Did you ever think about throwing a little humor in with such a dialogue-driven (yelling) movie? Writing, editing, and directing very bad. They need to cut about an hour and 40 minutes and make it a, possibly, tolerable short.
The Kindergarten Teacher (2018)
Waste of my time.
The acting is good, but the writing, directing, story is a total loss. I'm not sure how these bad movies come out of the famed film festival. A lot of wasted time on dead dialogue and empty spaces between interactions. It's supposed to be a drama because there is plenty of dead space to have "deep thoughts"? Not for me. I'd rather watch reruns of Seinfeld or Mr. Ed.
New in Town (2009)
Cliche
In my opinion the writing is not good. Need some creativity. From my perspective, mostly cliche's.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018)
Has Been Done, Boring
Bored after 15 minutes. This movie has essentially been done before. Cliche's and predictable. Amazing to me that this movie won a rather prestigious festival award.
Wonder Wheel (2017)
Oscar?
Why wasn't Kate Winslet nominated for an Oscar? The best movie of 2017. No credit for Woody? Politics? Excellent character development.
120 battements par minute (2017)
Politics in film awards ?
Repetitive. Did not go anywhere. Characters are "pretty", but mundane. Sensationalism, i.e lots of sex. Writing is fair at best. Need to cut about 40 minutes out of the movie. Do we really need to go through every step of dressing a dead man. Obviously politics in "film awards".
The Comedian (2016)
Poor writing
Just goes to show "stars" don't make the movie. Boring. Poor writing, mostly cliches.
