Dark Encounter (2019)
Out of this world!
Finally! I get to watch Dark Encounter... and it was everything I hoped it would be (and a whole lot more!). Ever since I heard about this film, I was desperate to see it. I love UFO/alien movies and this is, by far, one of the best I've ever seen. It's a beautifully made film, on every level. It's such a compelling narrative that is consistently entertaining, thrilling, scary, surprising and rather moving too. The whole thing looks and sounds out of this world - gorgeous music score too. Great filmmaking from British filmmaker Carl Strathie (definitely one to watch). A highly recommended movie - I LOVE it!
Cannibals and Carpet Fitters (2017)
Sheer class!
I'd been looking forward to seeing this movie for ages, specifically, since seeing the short film upon which it's based. And it was totally worth the wait! This is British horror comedy at its very best. It's absolutely hilarious, relentlessly entertaining, filled with some terrific gory special effects and even has some genuinely jump-out-of-your-seat scares! I loved it! And all horror fans should love it too! It's brilliant! Without a doubt, this is one of those movies I already know I'm going to watch over and over again. And, without trying to spoil it, there's one death scene in this movie that's up there with the very best I've ever seen! You'll know it when you see it!
Director James Bushe, in my opinion, could easily go on to being Britain's answer to Sam Raimi. And I can't wait to see more of his movies! Sheer class.
Shadows of a Stranger (2014)
Very impressive movie - low budget filmmaking at its finest
Even if you don't consider just how low budget this movie was, it's still an incredibly impressive piece of work. It's very well scripted and acted and has a very compelling narrative. Also, it looks and sounds absolutely amazing. Unlike a lot of low budget films it's abundantly clear that the filmmakers here understand filmmaking techniques - I've lost count of the amount of low budget movies I've seen in which its pretty obvious that the crew has no idea that they have to place the microphone close to the actors! Or the shot framing and composition is so godawful that it's like watching something your nan filmed. Shadows of a Stranger looks and sound like a movie that cost millions!
I highly recommend checking this one out. And I salute the filmmakers for their professionalism and for getting out there with limited resources and making a movie that they should be very proud of.
Welp (2014)
My kinda horror flick!
For a start, I love movies set in the woods. It's probably my favourite horror movie location so I knew I was going to love this movie from the moment I first saw the trailer - and it didn't let me down when I watched the full movie.
This is a brilliantly entertaining horror movie that is incredibly well made and really scary! The performances in the movie are all really good and the script was very compelling, leading to a fantastic, classic horror movie ending. The cinematography and direction are exceptional and I think Jonas Govaerts is a director to watch out for in the horror genre.
I loved it!!!
Charlie's Farm (2014)
Fantastic horror movie!
I absolutely loved this movie! It's a classic slasher horror flick with one of the best new killers I've seen since the 80's! WWA Wrestler Nathan Jones' Charlie is a brilliantly realised instant horror icon - and he's actually scary as hell!
This film ticked all the boxes for me - fantastic gore, inventive killings, a scary story, great setting, two excellent performances by horror royalty (Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley) and one hell of a frightening killer!
A brilliant horror movie mix of fun and foreboding! All horror fans need to see this movie!
The Mirror (2014)
An excellent and genuinely frightening horror movie
I was actually tiring a little of 'found-footage' movies after viewing a spate of recent ones that were poorly made, badly written and just plain implausible!
And then I watched The Mirror.
I thought it was an absolutely brilliant and genuinely frightening horror movie. I haven't felt so scared watching a horror movie in years! It literally gave me chills.
To begin with I found the story of the three flatmates attempting to capture some spooky footage rather entertaining - they're all fantastic, very natural actors and the interplay between them was highly watchable. But as events started getting out of hand, as a result of the ominous mirror, I found myself being drawn into the chilling narrative to the point of feeling like I was watching a nightmare being played out on the screen. The 'found-footage' style evoked such a sense of dread that I felt like I was actually watching one of my own nightmares. The third act of the film is an absolute masterclass in tension, suspense and disturbing, unsettling filmmaking - and all achieved with no music score!
I haven't had this kind of a reaction to a horror movie in a long time and it was really refreshing to watch something that actually scared me. Structurally and stylistically The Mirror is an excellent horror film and I'd recommend it to all horror fans - even if, like me, you'd become disillusioned with 'found-footage' - The Mirror should shine you back onto them!
