El hombre de al lado (2009)
Not recommended for overseas audiences
First of all, you have to be Argentinian to fully appreciate this film and understand the message. I am Argentinian and consider this film a clear critique of Argentinian society. In the UK, an equivalent would be a yuppie Knightsbridge-type couple living next to a cockney, east-end-type couple. The melancholy and excessive interest in trivial things, the approach and attitude to people considered "less" than oneself ("no es como la gente") and the reaction of the neighbour, who seems coarse and uneducated, but who is, in fact, more humane and kinder than the man we initially consider the "hero". We identify with the "hero" and then realize just how mistaken we are. I got bored in some moments and yes, it's long, but I think it's intentional so that you can feel the shift from one character to the other, the annoyance the "hero" feels and his flawed but very common relationship with his wife. I personally loved this film and will never forget it, but then again, I am Argentinian.
Despicable Me (2010)
Loved every second of it!
The film was much better than I thought although I did think the main character would be truly evil. My 5-year old understood and loved the movie so much we ran to get the DVD and she watches it every single day. We loved the movie because it's very, very funny, along the lines of Shrek and Madagascar and carries a healthy message about friendship, loyalty and kindness like Nemo and Ice Age. The main character's accent is delightful and the portrayal of the nasty-side of people is both realistic and healthy for children to see and talk about like Miss Hattie and the bank manager and his son. A must-see for almost anyone above 5.
Barnyard (2006)
Udders and everything else
The ONLY thing that bothered me throughout the entire movie were the udders shaking about in my face. Who cares if they talk, if it's violent (Tom and Jerry, Woody Woodpecker anyone?), but the fact that the entire crew overlooked such an obvious error is REALLY disturbing. It's like an insult...and the fact that they don't seem to change that error is even more offensive. I have even written to the producers, to the channel, and no one cares. It's really, really annoying. I thought the story was fun and the series is no different, but there is no way on earth I will ever stop being amazed at the ignorance of the creators. The makers of Ratatoille did extensive research on French restaurant kitchens, actors research their characters...
