Freedom Writers (2007)
Inspiring
This film has been in my watchlist for ages. Just got around to finally watching it. I really liked it. Brilliantly acted by Hillary Swank and the other classroom students. The melodrama is not overdone and the soundtrack is brilliant. Must watch.
Sightseers (2012)
Interesting dark comedy
I went in the film without any expectations and after only having read the premise thought that this would be a nice comedy. I remember having seen Ben Wheatley's Kill List and enjoyed it.
Sightseers is in the same vein and is a dark, humorous comedy about a couple in England who kill people for a laugh. It has a good concept and does deliver in parts. 6 out of 10 stars.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Magnificent
A magnificent black comedy by Bong Joon. Parasite is about class difference, greed and a lot of other things all wrapped into one. A highly engaging film, perfectly written and masterfully directed. It deserves all the awards it has received. 9/10
The System (2014)
Below average
A Pakistani film has made it to the cinemas after a long time since Waar released last year.
The System is about corruption in the country which goes from the lowest level to the highest.
The story is run-of-the mill which sees clichéd dialogs and incredibly weak acting by the male lead. Haider Ali (Sheraz) is the son of a pious imam. When he sees rampant corruption by the local SHO Cheema (Shafqat Cheema), he decides to join the police force to become a part of the system and to cleanse it.
The acting by Cheema, Nayyer Ejaz and Nadeem Baig was good. These veterans can hold their own in front of the camera in front of any actor. However, Sheraz, the débutant, was forgettable. The lad has a decent body, but his dialog delivery was cringe worthy and not a single moment of his performance was worth remembering.
The direction also lacked in several aspects as Shehzad Ghafoor took a long time to establish simple facts in the first half. The songs were average and so were the action scenes. Some of the extras were hilarious. Reminded me of the low-budget B grade Punjabi films of the past.
All in all, a very weak effort.
Waar (2013)
A let down
**REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS**
After watching the theatrical trailer of Waar a month or so ago, I was extremely excited about watching this big budget, action movie. Its not everyday that a slick looking film comes out of Pakistan.
However, after sitting through the nearly 140 minute film, I felt a huge let down.
The film's story revolves around Major Mujtaba (Shaan) who's dealing with personal loss at the hand of the cold and calculated terrorist Ramal (Shamoon Abbasi). Javeria and Ehtasham (Aisha Khan and Hamza Abbasi) are a brother-sister duo in the police force of Pakistan and are on the front-line, fighting terrorism.
The other major characters in the film are of a politician Ejaz Khan (Ali Azmat) who is trying to unite all the political parties to agree on building a dam, and his slogan for a 'Roshan Pakistan' reveal that he hopes for working selflessly for his people. Zoya (Meesha Shafi) is an agent (of RAW?) living in Pakistan.
The film is disjointed and the decision to make the spoken language 90% English is a strange one. A lack of force while delivering the dialogs, and a weak screenplay help in making the film lose its grip on the audience. The editing is non-existent, and this is what makes the film so poor. No flow in the movie at all.
The cast was a strong one, but Hamza Abbasi and Aisha Khan were the only actors who gave a good, strong performance. Shaan was one-tone throughout the film, and Shamoon Abbasi could have made his character more menacing as there was some room for him to play with his character.
The cinematography is good, with some decent action sequences.
It will take Pakistani cinema a long time to learn how to write a good, solid screenplay. The signs are positive, but there is still a long way to go.
Jannat 2 (2012)
Not bad
Jannat 2 tells the story of Sonu Dilli KKC (Kutti Kameeni Cheez). He's a small-time gun dealer in Delhi. Together with his friend, Balli (Zeeshan Ayub), Sonu is doing just fine in the illegal arms trade selling and even renting weapons to people. His life takes a turn when he is interrogated by tough cop ACP Raghuvanshi (Randeep Hooda) and eventually he becomes informer for the latter.
During this, Sonu meets Jhanvi (Esha Gupta), a doctor, and falls for her. Sonu decides to leave his life of crime and wants to settle down with Jhanvi. But Raghuvanshi wants to find the leader of the illegal arms racket and coaxes Sonu into joining the big-time arms mafia so that he can provide the ACP with valuable information about the gang and their dealings. The leader of the arms business is Mangal Singh Tomar (Manish Choudhary), who is co-incidentally Jhanvi's estranged father.
I will not be giving out the ending though.
The movie, for me, didn't lose its pace. Some songs just come out of nowhere and aren't as good as Jannat 1.
Acting wise, Hashmi gives a good performance as a street-smart, fast- taking Delhi-wallah. He has matured as an actor and is consistently delivering hits. Esha Gupta is stunning in the film, however she still needs to polish her acting skills a lot. The performance by Randeep Hooda as the tough cop, who is dealing with the loss of her wife, is exceptional. Everything from his voice, the rugged look, his dialog delivery was just perfect. He is a contender for the Best Supporting Actor award, most definitely. I remember his performance in Once Upon a time in Mumbai as ACP Agnel Wilson was also just perfect.
Overall the film is not bad and is worth a watch.
Love Mein Gum (2011)
Hopeless
This movie is absolutely pathetic. The acting by everyone is so forced especially that new guy Nabeel Khan. He literally took a 2 second gap while delivering his dialogs. He would say a couple of words, than take a break and than again would start. It was horrible to watch. He was really bad, no facial expressions, nothing.
Reema herself looked pretty at the start of the film but her acting also came out as very forced. Moamar Rana was his usual self. Gia Ali played the part of Jawed Sheikh's young and hot wife. She looked a real vixen and was hot tbh :). John Rambo was good as Rapphar Singh along with Johhny Lever as Sukhiya. The directing was below par. There were too many songs and the choreography was sh!te. Even the back up dancers' movements were not synchronized. The dressing of Momi Rana was absolutely abysmal.
There are so many things that are bad about this move i could go on and on. This is a the kind of film in which at the interval you think, 'Oh man wtf is this?' Its a really, really pathetic film. The story is rubbish, the acting is, well not good and the direction is nothing to be proud of. I do not recommend anyone to watch this film its not worth wasting your money.
Double Dhamaal (2011)
Crass
Double Dhamaal is rubbish. The movie is disgusting and obscene at times and there are too few jokes that make you laugh out loud.
It is no match to its predecessor. The first movie was brilliant with great acting by all four i.e. Arshad Warsi, Asish Choudhary, Ritesih Deshmukh and Javed Jaffery. It also had a fantastic performance by Asrani as Asish's father.
Double Dhamaal tries very hard but falls flat. Their is also a line at the end of the movie where Roy says that they (the gang) will take revenge from Kabir(Sanjay Dutt) in the next part Total Dhamaal. I hope they don't make it.
Also what was KanganaRanaut doing in the film?
I really had great expectations from this movie but it is totally not worth wasting your money. Watch it on TV instead.
Bol (2011)
Fantastic
Shoaib Mansoor has done it again. Bol is a powerful, bold and solid film. It is an extremely well directed and well presented movie with solid acting performances by Humaima Malick, who has the lead role and also delivers most of the powerful dialogs of the movie. Manzar Sehbai (Hakeem Saab) was top class and also must mention Shafqat Cheema, the bad guy of our Punjabi films, was brilliant.
Bol is also the debut of singer Atif Aslam and VJ Mahira. Their acting was good and both have the potential to become good actors.
The soundtrack is awesome. Listening to Sajjad Ali's voice is a real treat.
Bol is a must watch for every Pakistani.
